General information
|
PT. Indo Elevator Industri Pratama, better known by its trademark Indolift, was an Indonesian elevator manufacturer from Surabaya which existed from the 1980s up until the mid 1990s.
Overview
It was the first domestic elevator manufacturer in Indonesia. The headquarters and factory was located in Rungkut Menanggal, Surabaya, which also housed a head office, an elevator test tower and a showroom. The head office was four storey and had a hydraulic elevator, while the test tower was eight storey equipped with a traction elevator for testing purposes. The factory was said to have a space of 4000 square meters.
Most of its products were produced locally using domestic materials except for certain parts which had to be imported from Europe due to lack of self-manufacturing. These included geared motors (made by Bull Motors of England, or Montanari in Italy), doors (supplied by Italian company Sematic), ropes, guide rails, overspeed governors, etc. The controllers were produced by Indolift themselves with references from Semag, and were available in relay or microprocessor type. In an interview in 1988, Indolift claimed that only 30% of its product components were imported while the rest were produced locally in its factory.
Its sole distributor was Harton Tektama, a company which was previously a distributor of Semag elevators from Italy in the 1970s. Branch offices were located in Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya and Medan. It is unknown if Indolift also had representatives in other parts of Indonesia.

History
The history of Indolift can be traced back to the 1970s when a local mechanical and electrical engineering firm, PT. Harton Tektama, was established in 1974 and became the sole distributor of Semag elevators from Italy. The firm's role and experience in the elevator industry led to the establishment of a new local elevator company. Moreover, the Indonesian government's program of using local/domestic made products at that time also helped the establishment of the company.
Indolift was established in 1982 by F.H. Harun Widjaja as a domestic investment project (Penanaman Modal Dalam Negeri/PMDN) and was officially registered as PT. Indo Elevator Industri Pratama. However, it did not began production until 1986 when experimental production started, followed by commercial production in January 1987 under the trademark "INDOLIFT", which is a portmanteau of the word "Indonesia" and "lift". On the same year, the first Indolift elevator was installed at Bank Pasar Swadesi in Surabaya, which was a 15 persons-capacity passenger elevator serving five floors. Until the late 1980s, Indolift was the first and only Indonesian elevator company that was able to make elevators locally.
In 1994, Kone formed a joint venture with Indolift as a mean of establishing its presence in Indonesia, and just a year later Kone completely took over it, becoming PT. KONE Indo Elevator. This officially marked the end of the first elevator manufacturer in Indonesia.
Elevators that had been produced by Indolift
Indolift had produced traction and hydraulic elevators in different types, such as passenger, bed/hospital, panoramic and freight elevators. They also produced dumbwaiters. All of these elevators had no known model names.
1980s
Passenger elevators
Most likely the earliest type of Indolift elevators. These elevators used round white buttons which light up entirely when pressed. Exterior floor indicators had either a digital segmented or analog display accompanied with two triangle lanterns. The car station is usually black, featuring the same round buttons, a pair of two round lanterns (which function as direction indicators) and a simple 7-segments display as the floor indicator.
The doors were supplied by Italian elevator door manufacturer, Sematic. These doors are lightweight and slim, and have a very distinctive sound. The center opening door type appears to be a Sematic 2000 Type S2Z. However, these doors would often slam a bit hard upon closing.
Traction elevators use two speed AC geared motors produced by either Montanari or Motor Lift from Italy. These motors often makes a distinctive humming noise.

Dumbwaiters
These dumbwaiters used the same fixtures as the passenger elevator type.
Known installations in Indonesia:
- Hotel Surya Prigen Tretes, Tretes, Pasuruan
1990s
Passenger elevators (First generation)
These elevators are almost the same as the 1980s type apart from the different fixtures and slightly updated design.
The fixtures consist of black round buttons with an illuminating ring and floor indicators with 7-segments display. Hall lanterns, if present, are round acrylic blocks with a small metal triangle in the middle. On the main floor, there is usually a lantern on the top and a floor indicator on the bottom.
Known installations in Indonesia:
- Grand Inna Malioboro, Yogyakarta (1991, two have been replaced into Guangri elevators in 2018)
- Prime Plaza Sanur Hotel, Bali (1991, three have been replaced into Hyundai)
Freight elevators
These elevators are similar to the passenger type except that they are bigger and use telescopic sliding doors.
Known installations in Indonesia:
Passenger elevators (Second generation)
Produced in the mid 1990s, the second generation Indolift passenger elevators had major updates and improvements. These included new door equipment with GAL interlocks, door bumpers and thicker door sills, new fixtures, new motors and a more robust elevator car.
New fixtures were also introduced. The buttons are now round grey colored with an orange light in the middle and a new typeface. There was also a round silver button with an illuminating halo but this is extremely rare. Floor indicators continued to use the standard 7-segments display. The hall lanterns now have a black display where two red colored triangle arrows would light up.
There were two different microprocessor controls used in these elevators. One was from Indolift themselves, and the other one was the Kone "Traffic Master System 600" (TMS600) produced by Kone in Finland. The latter was used in elevators that had been produced at the time Kone having a joint venture with Indolift. Elevators with Kone TMS600 controls are also equipped with Kone's own motors.
Indolift elevators with Kone TMS600 controls are usually distinguished by the following features:
- The number on the floor indicators will change as soon as the elevator starts moving.
- Car calls from the opposite direction while the elevator is traveling will be rejected.
- Has the standard and distinctive 1980s-1990s Kone arrival chimes.

Known installations in Indonesia:
Post acquisition
- Further information: Indonesian Kone Elevators (1990s).
In 1995, Kone acquired Indolift as an attempt to established its company in Indonesia. Following the takeover, the company became KONE Indo Elevator.
Shortly after that, Kone began producing elevators locally using Indolift's latest elevator design and branded as their own. Nicknamed as "Indonesian Kone" by several Indonesian elevator enthusiasts, the design remained largely unchanged except for the brand name. Kone's geared motors and TMS600 controllers from Europe were used in these elevators. It is believed that these elevators were produced at their factory in Sidoarjo, East Java.
