Kone (officially typeset as KONE) is a Finnish engineering and service company. Founded on October 27, 1910 and headquartered in Espoo near Helsinki, Finland, its main businesses are manufacturing of building vertical transportation system such as elevators, escalators and moving walks (travelators). It is currently the fourth largest manufacturer of elevators in the world.
Overview
Kone was established in 27 October 1910 and is currently based in Espoo, Finland. It is currently the fourth largest elevator manufacturer in the world, just behind TK Elevator.
It is well known for being the pioneer of the world's first machine room less elevator system "MonoSpace" along with its iconic "EcoDisc" hoisting motor, which revolutionized the elevator industry since its launching in 1996.
Kone in Indonesia
It operates as PT. KONE Indo Elevator and is one of the fastest growing foreign elevator companies in Indonesia. It is currently a member of APPLE Indonesia.
History
Kone made its first presence in Indonesia as early as 1991 but it did not establish its Indonesian subsidiary until in the mid 1990s. It entered Indonesia for the first time through PT. Tanjung Raya Eramas. At the same time, TRE installed the first Kone elevator in Indonesia at the Bank Duta Building in Surabaya[1]. However, this relationship did not last for too long; shortly after TRE begun marketing Kone elevators and installed the first Kone elevator in Surabaya, Kone discontinued its distribution with TRE and decided to focus on its Singaporean subsidiary. Thus, the very brief relationship left TRE's first Kone installation as the only Kone elevator installed in Indonesia at that time.
It was in 1994 that Kone finally established its Indonesian subsidiary when they formed a joint venture with Indolift as a mean of re-entering the Indonesian market[2][3]. A year later, it was fully acquired by Kone, and became PT. KONE Indo Elevator since then.
In 1997, Kone supplied elevators for the Wisma Mulia 1 and Hotel Mulia Senayan in Jakarta, which were the first high-rise Kone elevators in Indonesia to serve more than 25 floors, surpassing their other high rise installations at Graha Pena, Surabaya which were completed at the same year and only had 21 floors.
In 2014, Kone announced that they would install double deck elevators at District8, Jakarta[4]. The double deck elevators, the first of its kind in Indonesia, are equipped with Kone's Polaris hybrid configuration destination dispatch system.
A training center as well as an intelligence center was opened in Kemayoran, Jakarta in 2016.
Applications
It is commonly seen in hotels and resorts, office buildings and often shopping centers. Most of the installations are Kone MonoSpace machine room less elevators.
Locations
The Jakarta head office is located on the ninth floor of Park Tower in the MNC Centre Complex in Menteng. The previous office was at KEM Tower in Kemayoran. Both Park Tower and KEM Tower have Kone elevators. Kone Indo also has an intelligence center (the first in Asia) as well as a training center in Kemayoran, Jakarta, which was opened in 2016[5]. Branch offices are located in Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Bali, and Makassar.
The Bandung branch was previously located in the Wahana Bakti Pos Building (now Graha Pos Indonesia), which had 1990s Indolift elevators with Kone Traffic Master System (TMS) 600 controllers. The elevators have been replaced into thyssenkrupp in 2018.
There was a factory located in Waru, Sidoarjo, East Java[6] but it has since closed down. As of 2023, the site is being occupied by another company[7].
Elevator models
Note: Models listed in Italic have no known names.
1990s
These elevators were produced shortly after Kone acquired Indolift in 1995, believed to be produced at the Sidoarjo factory in East Java. The design is the same as the late Indolift elevators except that the brand has been changed to Kone. They use Kone Traffic Master System 600 (TMS600) microprocessor controllers imported from Europe. They are sometimes nicknamed as "Indonesian KONE" by some Indonesian elevator enthusiasts, as the design is only found in Indonesia.
KONE 3000
Estimated to be a low speed traction elevator model[8]. Not much is known about it.
KONE 7000
Released in the mid 1990s, this is estimated to be a medium speed traction elevator model catered for the Asian markets[8]. Not much is known about it.
KONE 9000
This is a gearless custom type high speed model for high rise buildings. Not much is known about this model, but it uses the KONE Traffic Master System 9000 (TMS9000) microprocessor controller from Europe and the known speed is 6 or 8 meters per second. The buttons are rectangular (either black plastic or silver) with a red illuminating halo, and the floor indicators use LED dot matrix display.
In Indonesia, there are only two places in Jakarta installed with this model. The Plaza Indonesia Extension office tower in Jakarta was initially going to be installed with KONE 9000 elevators[9] but this never happened as the construction was halted due to the 1997 Asian financial crisis[10].
Known installations in Indonesia:
- Wisma Mulia 1, Jakarta (1997, some elevators have been modernized with Kone Destination)
- Mulia Hotel Senayan, Jakarta (1997)
Launched in 1996, it is the world's first elevator model without machine room. A green disk-shaped gearless motor called "Kone EcoDisc" is installed above the guiderail on the side of the shaft. Kone MonoSpace is designed for low to mid rise buildings. In Indonesia, this model only became available in the early 2000s, and most of the Kone elevators installed in the country since the 2000s are of this model.
This is a model of low to medium speed passenger elevator with a smaller machine room above the shaft. Like MonoSpace, it uses the Kone EcoDisc gearless motor which is installed inside the machine room. It was launched in 1998.
2000s to 2010s
All of these models were produced at Kone's Kunshan factory in China, unless otherwise stated.
This is a variant of the Kone MonoSpace machine room less elevator model catered for the Asian markets. The 3000S variant has higher speed and capacity range. Mainly seen in hotels and very rarely commercial buildings. It was sold from the early 2000s until around 2013.
3000 / 3000S MiniSpace
This is a variant of the Kone MiniSpace model catered for the Asian markets. It was sold until around 2013.
TranSys
This is a heavy duty machine room less freight elevator model.
2010s to 2020s
It is a variant of MonoSpace catered for the Asia Pacific markets, released in the early 2010s as a successor of the 3000/3000S MonoSpace variant. E MonoSpace is the economical variant for low rise residential buildings, N MonoSpace is for low to mid rise buildings with moderate traffic, and S MonoSpace is for buildings with high demanding traffic. Discontinued in the early 2020s and succeeded by the Kone MonoSpace DX variants.
E/N/S MiniSpace
This is a successor of the 3000/3000S MiniSpace variant. Mainly seen in high rise apartments and office buildings. It could also be configured as a double deck elevator.
It is the current machine room less heavy duty freight elevator model sold since 2000, and can be considered as the freight elevator version of Kone MonoSpace. It is mainly targeted for industrial buildings and warehouses but it can also be used in large shopping centers, like the ones at IKEA Alam Sutera in Tangerang. It is also capable of transporting vehicle. TranSys is rarely seen in Indonesia as it is more expensive than other Kone models due to its specifications.
2020s to current
Models installed after 2021 are now part of the Kone DX series, which is the current lineup of elevator models with cloud based connectivity features. It was first released in late 2019 for the European markets before it was expanded to the Asia Pacific region a year later. All of these models are made in the Kunshan factory in China, unless otherwise stated.
The current MonoSpace model sold since the early 2020s.
E/N/S MiniSpace DX
The current MiniSpace model sold since the early 2020s.
TranSys DX
The current model of large sized heavy duty freight elevator sold since the early 2020s.

Trivia
- Kone is currently the first and only foreign elevator company in Indonesia to have entered the Indonesian market by acquiring a local elevator company, in this case, Indolift. The acquisition was considered rather unique as not only it took over the company, but it also took over the elevator design Indolift made before the takeover; the design remained the same as it was an Indolift, only the brand was replaced into KONE.
- It is also the first elevator company in Indonesia to have successfully installed the first double deck elevators in the country.
- PT. Tanjung Raya Eramas, Kone's former sole distributor in Indonesia, was a subsidiary of Tanjung Raya Elok who distributed and installed Lift Munich elevators from West Germany. In addition, TREs was also the distributor of Elevadores Atlas (present day Atlas Schindler) elevators and escalators from Brazil[1], which were also introduced to the Indonesian market in 1991[11].
- In Finnish language, Kone means "machine".
- According to Kone, the corporate's current logo represents several things; the four blue boxes represents elevator cabins, shafts and possibly buildings too, while the vertical white lines represents the Finnish flag and the company's connection with the Finnish heritage. It was first created in 1968 and redesigned to its current look in 1999.
- It is the third major elevator company in Indonesia to have installed destination dispatch elevators in a hotel[12] after Schindler and Sigma.
- There is a Chinese elevator company called GiantKONE Elevator Co. Ltd. which was formed in 2005 under a joint venture between Kone and the Zhejiang Giant Group[13][14]. At least one GiantKONE installation exists in Jakarta[15] which seems to have been installed by an unknown local distributor. Giant branded elevators also exist in Indonesia[16][17].
