General information
|
LG Industrial Systems Elevator (or simply LG Elevator, formerly GoldStar Industrial Systems) was a South Korean elevator manufacturer which existed from the late 1960s until 1999.
Overview
It was a division of South Korean conglomerate LG Industrial Systems (the predecessor of LG ELECTRIC, part of the LS Group) which produced elevators, escalators and moving walks. For a long time since its establishment, it was the largest elevator manufacturer in South Korea. Until 1995, it was known as GoldStar.
LG Industrial Systems (formerly GoldStar Industrial Systems) started producing elevators in 1968 when it formed a technical partnership with Hitachi, thereby the elevator design is very similar to the latter. The factory was located in Changwon, and continued to be operated by LG-OTIS (later Otis Elevator Korea) after the merger until around 2013 when it was sold to LG Electronics. By the late 1990s, LG had stopped the partnership with Hitachi and began developing its own products.
The successor of GoldStar/LG is Otis Elevator Korea, who took over LG Industrial Systems's elevator division in 1999. Another successor is Mitsubishi Elevator Korea, who had a partnership with GoldStar and eventually established its Korean subsidiary in 2001. For overseas markets, the successor is Sigma Elevator Company, a subsidiary of Otis Korea formed in 2000 which basically serves as a brand of Otis Korea products for countries other than South Korea.
There was also GoldStar Electric Machinery Co. Ltd. which manufactured elevators under license from Mitsubishi. It started out in the late 1960s as Youngjin Electric, which was a joint venture between Mitsubishi and Seoul Trade. It initially imported and distributed Mitsubishi elevators before began manufacturing elevators under Mitsubishi license at a factory that is often referred to as the Juan factory in Incheon. Youngjin Electric underwent several name changes before finally renamed to Shinyoung Electric in 1978 when GoldStar bought the company. The Shinyoung name lasted until the late 1980s when the GoldStar name began to be used. Elevators made by this company were mainly sold for the Korean market, but very little had actually been exported overseas[1]. It is also a successor of Mitsubishi Elevator Korea.
History
GoldStar era (1968-1995)
The history started in 1968 when the then called GoldStar established an elevator factory in Changwon and signed a technical partnership with Hitachi. It was known as "GoldStar Industrial Systems". At the same time, Youngjin Electric had also opened a factory in Juan, Incheon which had a technical partnership with Mitsubishi in 1971. After several name changes, it became Shinyoung Electric in 1978.
In 1987, the two companies were combined and became "GoldStar Elevator" but they still operated as separate company.
LG era (1995-1999)
In 1995, GoldStar Industrial Systems changed name to LG Industrial Systems. Its elevator division became LG Industrial Systems Elevator (or simply "LG Elevator") and production continued under the "LG" trademark. By 1998, LG ended its partnership with Hitachi and Mitsubishi and started developing its products independently.
In 1999, Otis acquired LG Industrial Systems Elevator became LG-OTIS Elevator Company until 2005 when it changed name to Otis Elevator Korea. Meanwhile, LG Industrial Systems itself was spun off from the LG Group and became LS ELECTRIC, a company of LS Group.
In 2000, Sigma Elevator Company was set up as a brand of Otis Korea products sold exclusively for overseas markets. It is a subsidiary of Otis Elevator Korea.
Following the acquisition, the Changwon factory continued to operate until 2013 when it was sold to LG Electronics. The Juan factory remained operation until 2001 when it closed down.
GoldStar/LG elevators in Indonesia
GoldStar first entered Indonesia in 1983 through Jaya Kencana as its sole distributor. For more than ten years it was one of the most popular elevator brands in Indonesia due to the fact that at that time Korean products were comparably more cheaper than Japanese products. It was widely installed in shopping centers, hotels and hospitals, as well as some office, universities and high rise apartment buildings. GoldStar and LG escalators were also widely installed at that time.
Following the closure of LG Industrial Systems in 1999, Jaya Kencana switched to distribute Sigma elevators as well as installing a number of LG-OTIS branded elevators until 2005. They are now still the distributor of Sigma elevators in Indonesia.
Models
All of these models were produced by GoldStar Industrial Systems / LG Industrial Systems at the Changwon factory in South Korea unless otherwise stated.
1980s
Produced from the early 1980s until the early 1990s, this is a series of traction elevator models for low to mid rise buildings based on Hitachi elevators. The mainstream models consists of a passenger (DP), panoramic (DO), bed/stretcher (DB) and freight (DF) elevator.
Early to late 1990s
Produced from 1989 until 2000, this is a series of low speed traction elevator models for low to high rise buildings up to about 20 floors. These were the first GoldStar models to adopt microprocessor controllers and VVVF inverters. The speed is typically 1 meters per second or less. Models belong to this series are LVP (passenger), LVS (service), LVO (panoramic), LVB (bed/stretcher) and LVF (freight). In the mid 1990s, LGP, LGS, LGB and LGO were launched by LG Industrial Systems Elevator as an improvement of the LVP/LVS/LVB/LVO models.
This is a series of of medium speed traction elevator models for low to mid rise buildings. Models belong to this series are MVP (passenger), MVS (service), MVO (panoramic), MVB (bed/stretcher) and MVF (freight). In the mid 1990s, MGP, MGS, MGB and MGO were launched by LG Industrial Systems Elevator as an improvement of the MVP/MVS/MVB/MVO models.
Produced from 1992 until 2001, this is a medium to high speed traction elevator models for high rise buildings. Models belong to this series are HVP-I/HVP-II (passenger), HVS (service) and HVF (freight). In the mid 1990s, HGP was launched by LG Industrial Systems Elevator as an improvement of the HVP-I and HVP-II models.
Late 1990s to early 2000s
Released in the late 1990s, this is a lineup of traction elevator models developed independently by LG Industrial Systems after ended its partnership with Hitachi and Mitsubishi. There are four models in this lineup:
- Di1: Standard low speed elevator for low rise buildings, a successor of the L series.
- Di2: Medium speed elevator for mid rise buildings, a successor of M series.
- DS-4: Medium speed elevator for high rise buildings, a successor HVP-I. It was initially known as Di4.
- Di5: High speed elevator for high rise buildings, a successor of HVP-II.
Following Otis's acquisition of LG Industrial Systems's elevator business in 1999, it continued to be produced and sold under the LG-OTIS brand and later Otis until the 2010s. For overseas markets, it was sold under the Sigma name until 2012. A significant amount of LG-OTIS branded elevators were also exported to overseas markets.
The design and fixtures were based on the late models of LG elevators apart from a few differences. One distinctive feature is that it is now possible to cancel the wrong floor selection by pressing the same button again once. However, some early Sigma as well as LG-OTIS branded elevators may not have this feature.

Trivia
- GoldStar was the second oldest South Korean elevator manufacturer after Dong Yang, which started production in 1966.
- In Indonesia, it was the first South Korean elevator manufacturer to enter the country followed by Dong Yang.
- Due to a technical partnership with Hitachi, most of the components used in the Changwon produced GoldStar/LG elevators and escalators were heavily based on Hitachi. For example, the landing door keyhole is the same as Hitachi. Because of this, GoldStar/LG products are often mistaken as Hitachi.
- GoldStar's SKA microprocessor controllers were inherited by Otis Korea/Sigma following the acquisition of LG's elevator business. The successor of this control is believed to be the Otis ACD series.
