List of elevator manufacturers

From Indonesia Elevator Guide
Jump to: navigation, search

This is a list of elevator manufacturers/companies that are operating and/or have operated in Indonesia. Some companies, especially major companies, operate their own branch in Indonesia under their own corporate name. Some of them also operate sub-branches or representative offices in many major cities around the country. Some others, like Shanghai Mitsubishi, Sigma, and few others operate through a third-party company/sole agent/distributor.

There are also elevator companies that don't actually made elevators and/or escalators and instead they import elevator parts overseas and assemble them - these companies are usually called "generic elevator companies" by elevator enthusiasts.

As of now, there has not been any single local elevator company in Indonesia that has been able produce its own elevators or escalators using entirely locally made components and equipment.

Major companies

These are some of the major elevator companies operating in Indonesia. Almost all of them operate as a subsidiary company and/or under their own corporate name, with the exception being Shanghai Mitsubishi and Sigma where they are representated by third-party distributors. Their head office is always located in Jakarta, usually in buildings where the elevators were installed by the same company. Some of these companies also have branches or representative offices in major cities throughout Indonesia, such as Bandung, Surabaya, Denpasar (Bali), Makassar, etc.

  • Distributed in Indonesia by: PT. Karya Intertek Kencana (19??-1999)
  • Status: Acquired by Thyssen in 1999, became Thyssen Dover until 2001 and later ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas.

Dover Elevators was a well-known American elevator manufacturer from Memphis, Tennessee, United States. Formerly a division of Dover Corporation (which still exists today), it started out as the Rotary Automobile Rotary Lift Co. (also known as Rotary Lift) that was formed in 1925. Rotary invented the modern hydraulic elevator system called "Oildraulic" in 1937. In 1955, Rotary changed name to Dover Corporation and splits into two different divisions; Rotary Lift which manufactures automobile lifts, and Dover Elevators which manufactured passenger and freight elevators. Dover Elevators was acquired by Thyssen in 1999, and became Thyssen Dover for a short period. In 2001, Thyssen Dover became ThyssenKrupp Elevator Americas.

In Indonesia, Dover elevators were distributed and installed by PT. Karya Intertek Kencana[4]. Not many Dover elevators were installed in Indonesia and therefore it is extremely difficult to find one, even in modernized form. The only known Dover elevator was located at Taman Dayu Club & Resort in Pasuruan, East Java but unfortunately it was totally replaced into a Kone MonoSpace MRL elevator in the early 2010s. As of now there are no other existing Dover elevators have been discovered so far.

Elevadores Atlas

Elevadores Atlas elevator advertisement, circa 1991.
  • Country of origin: Brazil
  • Native name: Elevadores Atlas S.A.
  • Established: 1918
  • Founders: AM Lowsby, Frederich James Pirie and Carlos Dumont Villares
  • Based in: São Paulo, Brazil
  • Distributed in Indonesia by: PT. Tanjungraya Eramas (1991-unknown)

Elevadores Atlas was a Brazilian elevator company based in São Paulo, Brazil. Founded in 1918 by two English engineers, it started out as a small workshop until it became the largest independent elevator manufacturer in Brazil. Atlas had a long technical partnership with Westinghouse of USA in which both companies would sometimes exchange patents with each others, therefore the elevator design and features that Atlas made were heavily based on Westinghouse's elevators. In 1999, Schindler bought the company and became Atlas Schindler until now.

While none of its elevators and escalators have been discovered in Indonesia so far, Atlas did exported their elevators to Indonesia, where the products were distributed and installed by PT. Tanjungraya Eramas, a subsidiary of Tanjung Raya Elok who distributed Lift Munich elevators from West Germany[5]. Atlas entered the Indonesian market in 1991, with their first elevator installed at Hotel Marannu (now Hotel Singgasana) in Makassar, South Sulawesi[6].

GoldStar Elevator Bali Mandira 4.jpg

  • Based in: South Korea
  • Distributed in Indonesia by: PT. Jaya Kencana (1983-1999)
  • Status: Acquired by Otis in 1999 and became LG-OTIS until 2005.

LG Elevator (formerly GoldStar) was a South Korean elevator manufacturer that was a division of LG Industrial Systems. It is the predecessor of today's Otis Elevator Korea as well as Sigma Elevator Company. It produced elevators from 1968 until 1995 when it was known as GoldStar. In 1999, Otis acquired LG Elevators and became LG-OTIS, which lasted until 2005 when it changed name to Otis Elevator Korea (OEK). GoldStar produced elevators and escalators under its division GoldStar Industrial Systems (later LG Industrial Systems).

In Indonesia, GoldStar/LG elevators were distributed by PT. Jaya Kencana from 1983 until the late 1990s. By 1990, Jaya Kencana had installed about 200 elevators and 300 escalators in several major cities across in Indonesia. After LG's elevator division was sold to Otis in 1999 and Sigma was formed in 2001, Jaya Kencana began distributing Sigma elevators and remained so until now. They also installed a number of LG-OTIS elevators between 2000 and 2005.

Haushahn

Haushahn callpanel.jpg
  • Country of origin: Germany
  • Native name: Haushahn GmbH
  • Established: 1889
  • Founder: Immanuel Hahn
  • Based in: Stuttgart, Germany
  • Distributed in Indonesia by: PT. Ihaka Saka Nusantara (1994-1997)
  • Status: Acquired by Schindler in 1998, and became part of Schindler Group.

Haushahn was a large family-owned elevator company from Stuttgart, Germany that has been acquired by Schindler in 1998. This German company entered Indonesia in 1994 through PT. Ihaka Saka Nusantara as its distributor. It came to a complete end in 1997 due to the Asian financial crisis, and Ihaka Saka Nusantara decided to stop importing Haushahn elevators as the very high import costs caused by the crisis were too much for them to handle. Because of its very short history in Indonesia, not many Haushahn elevators were installed; in fact there were only about 90 units installed in the country, making it very difficult to find. Only a few existing installations still remain today.

Ihaka Saka Nusantara itself still exists today, and since 2004 it became a distributor of Hosting elevators from China which are installed in Indonesia under the "AE-Lift Hosting" brand.

Indolift

Indolift Nameplate.jpg

  • Country of origin: Indonesia
  • Based in: Surabaya, Indonesia

In 1995, the joint venture was fully acquired by Kone and the company became PT. KONE Indo Elevator. Shortly after that, Kone began making elevators that were heavily based on Indolift's design before they began importing their own elevators from Europe and China. The company has been absorbed by Kone and has since defunct.

Lift Munich

Lift Munich Nameplate Bali.jpg
  • Country of origin: Germany (West Germany before 1992)
  • Native name: To be confirmed
  • Established: 1967
  • Headquarters: Germany
  • Distributed in Indonesia by:
    • PT. Tanjung Raya Elok (1985-2005)
      • CV. Auro Lift (representative in Bali)
  • Status: Merged with Sematic Group in 2000 and changed to Liftmaterial after that, and later transferred to Wittur Group in 2015.

A West German elevator manufacturer, Lift Munich (now Liftmaterial) elevators in Indonesia were distributed by its sole distributor PT. Tanjung Raya Elok (TRE) between 1985 and 2005[5][8]. They were also installed in Bali by CV. Auro Lift, a local company. It only managed to install a small number of elevators, thus making it very difficult to find and this has been worsen by the fact that most of its older installations have either been replaced or modernized. All of their elevators made from the 1980s to 1990s used Schaefer fixtures from Germany, similar to Thyssen and Haushahn. Once part of the Sematic Group since 2000, it is now under the ownership of Wittur Group when Wittur took over Sematic in 2016.

Some of the prominent Lift Munich installations in Indonesia were at Graha Iskandarsyah, Jakarta (already replaced by Hyundai and Sigma) and in The Royal Beach Seminyak Resort, Bali. The first Lift Munich elevator in Indonesia was installed in 1984 at the former IBEC Building in Jakarta, but the building was demolished in 2014.

  • Headquarters: Bologna, Italy
  • Distributed in Indonesia by:
    • PT. Wira Mustika Indah (1980s?-1990s?)
  • Status: Defunct, acquired by Kone in 1985

Sabiem was an elevator manufacturer from Bologna, Italy which was founded in 1921. At that time it was one of the two major Italian elevator manufacturers that have managed to export its elevators overseas (the other one was Fiam, based in Milan). Sabiem was acquired by Kone in 1985.

While it mainly exported its elevators to Hong Kong and perhaps Latin America, Sabiem did exported its elevators to Indonesia. It is unclear when Sabiem entered Indonesia, but by the late 1980s it was distributed by Wira Mustika Indah. To date, no existing Sabiem elevators have been found in Indonesia.

Thyssen

Thyssen Logo Esc.jpg
  • Country of origin: Germany (West Germany before 1992)
  • Native name: Thyssen Aufzüge AG
  • Established: 1976 (elevator division)

One of the predecessors of thyssenkrupp (now TK Elevator), Thyssen was a major German manufacturing company which mainly produced steels, but it also produced elevators and escalators. It entered the elevator industry in 1973 when it took over German manufacturing company Rheinstahl AG. Three years later, Rheinstal AG was renamed to Thyssen Industrie AG which focused on steel and other heavy industries related products and Thyssen Aufzüge AG which focused on vertical transportation systems. In 1999, Thyssen merged with Krupp (another German steel manufacturer) and became ThyssenKrupp in 2001.

It first entered Indonesia in 1984 through PT. Thysindo Griatama (now PT. Marico Gria). One of the most famous Thyssen installations in Indonesia is the one in Plaza Surabaya shopping center in Surabaya which was completed in the 1980s, and still exist. Its distributor, which now operates under the name PT. Marico Gria, still maintains a handful of remaining Thyssen elevators in Indonesia.

Third-party companies

Main article: Third party elevator companies

Third-party elevator companies (or commonly referred as generic elevator companies by elevator enthusiasts) are elevator companies that do not make their own elevators. Instead, they buy and import elevator parts and components from other countries (usually China) and assemble them into brand new elevators which are then branded by themselves. Most of them install elevators (and escalators, if any) while some others only provide maintenance or repair services and do not install elevators at all. These companies are often preferred by clients who wanted to install elevator(s) at a comparably lower price compared to major companies.

There are many third-party elevator companies operating in Indonesia, and most of them have their own trademark brand. They mostly operate in one area or region where they are based at, but some companies such as Louser Lift operate branches in various cities throughout Indonesia.

Some of the domestic third party companies that have a well known reputation and have installed quite a lot throughout Indonesia:

  • Pillar Utama Contrindo (Pillar)
Established in 1998, it initially started out as a company providing maintenance services for Korean elevators and escalators in Bandung, West Java. It is probably a local generic company with the most number of installations in Indonesia and it is quite popular. Almost all of its elevators use Shanghai STEP control systems and fixtures from China, but in recent years they started using parts from Chinese company NBSL. It also installs escalators and moving walks under their own brand, which are actually made by Suzhou Xinda Escalator Accessories Co., Ltd. in China and are essentially knock-off (copied) Schindler products.
  • Louserindo Megah Permai (Louser Lift)
Established in 1987 by former Otis elevator technicians. It is known to use Samil Eltec "SICON" control systems and Haisung machine from South Korea for most of its elevators, and almost all of its older installations use Jinlix fixtures from Taiwan. Some older Otis elevators in Indonesia are modernized by this company. They are also a distributor of Kleemann elevators from Greece, often co-branding them as "Kleemann Louser Lift".
  • Marico Gria (MG)
A company based in Jakarta established in 1984 which was initially a distributor for Thyssen elevators until 1999 and later ThyssenKrupp until 2005. It is known for using German made Schneider Steuerungstechnik GmbH (LiSA) control systems for new installations, but it also use Shanghai STEP controls quite often for new installations and modernization. It is also a distributor of Mac Phuarsa (MP) elevators from Spain, as well as Sepac and Walec elevators from China. The company was previously known as Thysindo Griatama when it was a distributor for Thyssen.
  • Abdi Teknik Jaya (Abtech Lift)
A small-medium sized company operating since 1999. Its elevators are usually found in small low rise buildings and occasionally hospitals, and they are often basic and simple.
  • Indoraya Nusantara Djaya (LINES)
A generic company whose history remains a bit unclear. It was previously known under its trademark LINE and trading as PT. Industri Lift Indo Nusantara. It is known for using Mico control systems and fixtures from China, but in recent years it has switched to use fixtures from Nantong Hunter. It has a representative in the province of Bali known as PT. Sukuba Indo Jaya which, apart from distributing LINES elevators, also distributes Siglen and Fuji Electric (Fe) elevators from China.
  • Etika Sejahtera (Delta Lift)
A smaller generic elevator company from Sidoarjo, East Java. It installs elevators with Mico control systems and fixtures just like LINES, so it is often confused with LINES due to their similarities.
  • Kori Elesca Utama (KORI)
Based in Surabaya. Its elevators are easily recognized by their rather unique looking button fixtures with green and red (dual) light. It is said that the company is run by a South Korean expatriate.
  • Tamiang Multi Trada (Tamiang)
Established in 2004, it is perhaps well known for its overrated self proclaimed "Indonesia Bisa" (English: "Indonesia Can") slogan on its social medias for promoting its products and services, allegedly to make people think that its products are made locally despite the fact that it does not produce its own elevators so far. Most of their projects are replacement or modernization of older elevators of any brands, but they also install new elevators for new buildings. It also has six subsidiary companies, of which two of them are Fuji Ta Nayottama and Sei Liput Perdana[9].

Other smaller/minor companies

These are some of the smaller or medium-sized elevator companies that exists in Indonesia. Most of these companies are representated by third party distributors, while some others have their own subsidiaries in Indonesia.

Chinese companies

There are numerous Chinese elevator companies operating in Indonesia. While most of these companies operate through local companies as their authorized distributors, a few others operate their own subsidiary directly. Very few companies are subsidiary of major elevator companies and are therefore distributed directly by the parent company's Indonesian subsidiary, such as XJ Schindler and Marohn TKE (except Shanghai Mitsubishi which is currently distributed by third party companies). It is estimated that Chinese elevator companies first entered the Indonesian elevator market in the 1990s.

Some of the well known Chinese elevator companies operating in Indonesia are listed below:

  • SJEC Corporation
Based in Suzhou and established in 1992[10], this is one of the well known Chinese elevator companies that has shipped its products globally.
