Elenessa is one of Mitsubishi's current machine room less elevator model. Released in 2001[1], it replaced GPQ, Mitsubishi's first MRL model which had been produced since 1998. It is designed for low to mid rise buildings, and it is produced by Mitsubishi Elevator Asia Co. Ltd. in Chonburi, Thailand.

The Elenessa uses a thin gearless machine (similar to Kone EcoDisc) and a slim control board. Unlike other machine room less elevators where a separate cabinet is required to house the control board, Elenessa's inspection control board is stored behind the top floor landing station, which requires a special key to unlock it. Mitsubishi claims that it was designed so as not to compromise or affect the building's interior aesthetic, and to save space[2]. This configuration was later brought over to NEXIEZ-MRL, Mitsubishi's second MRL model released in 2011.

The elevator design has been dramatically changed so that the elevator can be easily used by disabled people. For example, a side wall mounted panel is applied as a standard feature to make it easier for wheelchair to enter and exit the elevator without having to turn around. The fixtures have been completely overhauled; buttons now have tactile and updated typeface, the door open button is now wider and the floor indicator is now 1.5 times bigger than the old one.

It was Mitsubishi's flagship model of machine room less elevator until the release of NEXIEZ-MRL in 2011. Since then, its status as a flagship model has been taken over by NEXIEZ-MRL and the number of new installations has dropped significantly due to the popularity of NEXIEZ-MRL. The same thing also happened to the machine room model counterpart NexWay-S, shortly after the release of NEXIEZ-MR. Since November 2013, it has become a large-capacity only model.

Characteristics

Elenessa elevators have an audible low-pitched buzzing motor when they operates, but no brake sound is heard. They usually level quick like NexWay-S and NEXIEZ.

The easiest way to tell a Mitsubishi Elenessa is to see if the top floor landing station has a keyhole or not. This keyhole is used to unlock the inspection control board that is stored behind the panel[2], so if the keyhole is there, then it's definitely Elenessa. However, as the NEXIEZ-MRL shares some similarities with Elenessa, it is difficult to tell the differences between the two models.

Despite this, it can be easily tell by its capacity range for elevators produced after November 2013. If a Mitsubishi MRL elevator has a capacity between 1800 and 2500 kilograms, then it's definitely Elenessa. NEXIEZ-MRL cannot have a capacity more than 1600 kilograms.

Variants

Elenessa

Released in 2001[1], it is the very first Elenessa model. It is believed that the first Elenessa elevator in Indonesia was installed in a Japanese school in Tangerang. In 2006, it was upgraded into Elenessa Series-IP and -AP[1].

Elenessa Series-IP/AP

Released in 2006 as an improvement of the original Elenessa model. Discontinued in the early 2010s, most likely in 2013 when Mitsubishi reorganized its product lineup. In 2009, it was upgraded into Elenessa Series-IP/AP Version2.

Elenessa Series-IP/AP Version2

Released on July 13, 2009 as an improvement of the original Series IP variant[3][1]. Several new features and design that had been introduced earlier to NexWay-S Series IP/AP were incorporated to this model. Also a number of specifications have been increased to suit various demands, such as maximum capacity (from 1600 to 2500 kg), number of floors (from 26 to 30) and number of elevator cars (from 4 to 8).

The difference between Series IP and AP is the maximum capacity; Series IP is 2500 kilograms and Series AP is 1600 kilograms. Since November 2013, a new design and fixtures have been incorporated into this model[4], replacing the previous design that had been used since the initial release of the original model. Series AP Version 2 was discontinued around the 2010s and in November 2013, Series IP Version 2 was updated into a large-capacity model only with a capacity range of 1800-2500 kilograms[4].

Elenessa Series-IP Version2

In November 2013, Series AP Version 2 was dropped from the product lineup and Series IP Version 2 was updated into a large-capacity model only with a capacity range of 1800-2500 kilograms[4]. This is because the smaller capacity range has now been covered by NEXIEZ-MRL. The maximum number of floors has also been reduced from 30 to 24. It is very difficult to find as it is not widely installed due to the popularity of NEXIEZ-MRL as the current flagship MRL model.

Shanghai Mitsubishi Elenessa

Elenessa is also produced by Mitsubishi's Chinese subsidiary Shanghai Mitsubishi under their own brand. The design remained the same apart from the different brand name. Elevators produced from 2010s onward adopt the design from Mitsubishi NEXIEZ-MRL.

Fixtures

2001 to 2013

Compared to the previous design, these fixtures here have been significantly redesigned and improved to make them more user-friendly for all people. There are no surface mounted car stations, except for landing stations.

Buttons

The buttons have been redesigned and fitted with a raised number (tactile) so that it can be easily recognized by the visually impaired people. The typeface has been changed from Helvetica to Gill Sans MT to make it easier to see. Alarm button is now bigger and the door open button has been widen to avoid confusion with the door close button. There are four different button types:

  • E type: The standard button and is the most common one. It is black and shaped like a barrel with raised edges and a tactile that lights up orange.
  • F type: The flat version of E type without tactile and raised edges.
  • V type: Round silver button with a raised edges and a tactile that lights up orange.
  • J type: Flat round black buttons with orange illuminating letter.
  • H type: A set of smaller flat square black/white buttons with an orange light strip on the top, usually seen in high rise elevators with a large amount of floors. The door control buttons are the F type.

Most elevators with side wall mounted car stations have a green protruding button for the ground or main floor. This is to make people easier to locate the main floor or way out of the building.

Alarm button placement is different depending on the position of the car station; it is above the floor buttons for front mounted panels, and below the floor buttons (in line with the door control buttons) for side mounted panels.

Floor indicators

Significantly redesigned and enlarged with bigger LED dot matrix display and arrow that are 1.5 times bigger than the previous display. Full height car stations have a stretched top display while partial height car stations don't. Landing stations and indicators are almost the same as the GPS-III elevators. An LCD display with animated arrow was also available as an option.

Hall lanterns

Remained same as before, which are clear acrylic-like square blocks that light up orange. By 2013, several new lantern designs became available and all lanterns, including the standard ones, now use LED lights. Custom lanterns also exist, but these are rare.

2013 to present

In November 2013, the old fixtures used in NexWay-S, Elenessa and NEXIEZ elevators were replaced with a new design[4]. For more details about these fixtures, refer to Mitsubishi NEXIEZ-MR#Fixtures.

Trivia

  • Elenessa is based on the Mitsubishi ELEPAQ-i model in Japan, which adopts a bottom drive type where the machine is installed on the pit.
