Overview

The Elevonic 401 was a high speed gearless elevator model of Otis for high rise buildings. It was jointly developed with Hamilton Test Center and United Technologies (UTC), and was officially launched in 1982. The name "Elevonic" is a portmanteau of the word "Elevator" and "Electronics".

This model had numerous state-of-the-art features at that time, such as artificial voice announcement, microcomputer controls, and the ability to bypass hall calls should the car is overloaded. It was a popular model and sold very well, with about 8000 units have been installed around the world as of 1991. Elevonic 401 was discontinued in the 1990s in favor of its successor, Otis Elevonic 411, which was launched in 1989. It is known that Elevonic 401 was produced in the United States, Germany and possibly Japan.

In Indonesia, this model was mainly installed in high rise office buildings completed in the 1980s. The first installation in Indonesia was believed to be from 1984.

Notable features

  • Solid State Direct Drive: This replaced motor generator (MG) sets and could save energy by up to 20-40 %.
  • Transducers: A device which sends information to the data center in the controller.
  • Primary Position Transducer (PPT): An electronic positioning device which replaced the old fashioned Otis "pie plates" and "meat slicer" type mechanical floor selectors.
  • Secondary Position Transducer (SPT): An electronic device which monitors the elevator car's leveling accuracy.
  • Primary Velocity Transducer (PVT): A device which adjusts the elevator speed.
  • Load Weighing Transducer (LWT): An electronic device which monitors and informs the elevator car's load accuracy. If the car is full, it will bypass hall calls and only responds to car calls for safety reason.

Characteristics

  • Elevonic 401 elevators are known to travel fast and level quick. They also make a distinctive humming noise when they start and stop.
  • When the elevator is traveling through non-stop floors, the floor indicator will show "EZ" ("Express Zone").
  • There is a chance that the floor number on the inside floor indicator will blink when the elevator is on nudge mode.

Fixtures

The fixtures used in Otis Elevonic 401 elevators are called Series 1. They have distinctive design. The car station is mounted on the front panel and is shaped like a telephone, with the upper angled part having the floor indicator and the lower angled part having floor buttons.

Buttons

The buttons are white plastic that light up when pressed. These buttons always have black plate attached on them where the number/lettering is located. Door control buttons are green, while alarm button is yellow. Floor buttons were arranged in two or three rows, the latter is more commonly seen in high rise installations.

Floor indicators and hall lanterns

The floor indicators use green vacuum fluorescent display (VFD). One special feature is that the car floor indicator had the ability to display special or custom messages under the floor number.

Hall lanterns are black square display with a green illuminating arrow. Most elevators have a combination of hall lantern and floor indicator. There were also in-car lanterns located on the car door jambs.
