Schindler is a Swiss elevator and escalator manufacturer established in 1874. It is the second largest elevator manufacturer (after Otis Elevator Company) in the world, as well as the world's largest escalator manufacturer.

Overview

Schindler was founded in 1874 by Robert Schindler and Eduard Villiger in Lucerne, Switzerland. Since the 1970s, the company is headquartered in Ebikon, in the canton of Lucerne, Switzerland.

It is the second largest elevator manufacturer in the world after Otis, as well as the largest manufacturer of escalators in the world. This Swiss company is perhaps known for its elevator destination dispatch system. In fact, Schindler is the first elevator company to have successfully invented such system, with its first system "Miconic 10" unveiled in 1992.

Schindler in Indonesia

It operates under the name PT. Berca Schindler Lifts, a joint venture between Jardine Schindler and Central Cipta Murdaya (CCM).

History

It is believed that Schindler started installing elevators in Indonesia in the 1960s or early 1970s. The oldest existing Schindler elevator in Indonesia so far dates back from the 1960s, which may indicate that this was probably the time Schindler started installing elevators in Indonesia.

In the 1970s, it was represented by PT. Capitol Mutual Corporation (CMC) as its distributor until 1980 when distribution changed hands to PT. Berca Indonesia[1]. By 1993, Berca Indonesia had installed around 40 units of Schindler elevators in Indonesia[1].

In 2000, after nearly two decades with Berca Indonesia, Schindler established PT. Berca Schindler Lifts under a joint venture between Jardine Matheson and Central Cipta Murdaya (who owns the Berca companies).

Head office

The current head office is located in Kembangan, an area in West Jakarta. The three storey building was opened in 2017 and houses the largest integrated "knowledge center" in Southeast Asia as well as a training center[2][3]. It also contains one Schindler 3300 AP elevator, one Schindler 9300 AE escalator in the main lobby, as well as several mock-up elevator simulators for training purposes in various training rooms. The office is not far from Puri Indah Mall, where it has Schindler elevstors.

The previous head office was located on one of the lower floors of Menara Rajawali in Mega Kuningan, Jakarta which has Schindler elevators from the late 1990s.

Branches

Schindler currently has branches in Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar (Bali), Makassar, Batam and Medan.

Applications

Schindler is now one of the most popular elevator brands and one of the largest elevator companies operating in Indonesia. They are widely seen in high risr office buildings (especially in Jakarta), hotels and resorts as well as a number of shopping centers and residential buildings.

1950s to 1960s

Passenger elevators

Schindler passenger elevators from the 1950s and 1960s were two speed AC (alternative current) drive with geared motor. Most of them had manual swing landing doors similar to those found in Europe, while some others used fully automatic doors. The fixtures consist of non-illuminating black buttons and analog floor indicators with illuminating circles.

One of the earliest known Schindler elevators in Indonesia was found in Museum Bank Mandiri, Jakarta[4], which is believed to be from the 1960s. This elevator was originally a 1930s Starlift (a defunct Dutch elevator manufacturer)[5] imported from the Netherlands, and is believed to had been "modernized" by Schindler sometime later, possibly in the 1960s. The original Starlift machine, which was still in the museum, had an old Schindler logo which might indicate that the elevator had been altered by Schindler[6]. The defunct elevator served as a museum display, and remained so until late 2023 when it was fully replaced into a Sigma elevator. Other similar non-operating elevators also exist in the museum.

Freight elevators

There is a derelict Schindler freight elevator located in an unknown building in Bali which possibly dates back from the 1950s.

1970s to 1980s

Traction and hydraulic elevators

Schindler elevators from the 1970s until 1990s have no known names. These elevators mainly used Miconic microprocessor controls that were introduced in the 1970s.

designS

Launched in 1984, this was a low speed economical model primarily designed for low rise residential and commercial buildings. It was the first Schindler model to adopt LED dot matrix displays for the floor indicators, and wad available in traction and hydraulic. The model was mainly sold in Europe, but it was also sold in Asia, including Indonesia where only a handful of installations had been installed.

1990s

Traction elevators

The standard or custom-type Schindler elevators for low to mid rise buildings completed in the 1990s. These elevators use the Schindler Miconic microprocessor controls and M-Line fixtures. Model names are currently not known.

Low cost model (?)

Not much is known about this particular type of 1990s Schindler elevators other than the fact that it used M-Series fixtures just like the standard models, and that the landing floor indicator is on the landing call station. It appears that it is a low cost model for low rise buildings.

Known installations in Indonesia:

  • Sejahtera Family Apartment, Yogyakarta (1996)

China Schindler

China Schindler elevator advertisement, circa 1992.

China Schindler Elevator or CSE was a joint venture company formed in 1980 between Schindler and a Chinese elevator company in Beijing, China. It was the first foreign joint venture with a Chinese company in China[7]. CSE elevators and escalators were produced in China under Schindler's technology from Switzerland with local designs from China. It is believed that these elevators had the same design and fixtures as the ones used in the original Swiss made Schindler elevators.

In Indonesia, China Schindler elevators and escalators were distributed by PT Berkah Kurnia Elevatorindo rather than PT Berca Indonesia. No known CSE elevator installation have been found in Indonesia so far, but one CSE escalator was known to have existed in ITC Cipulir Mas, Jakarta[8]. It was replaced into a Kone escalator in the late 2010s.

Known installations in Indonesia (suspected):

2020s to current

In March 2020, Schindler unveiled a new series of modular elevator systems consist of three models; Schindler 1000, Schindler 3000 and Schindler 5000[11]. Of the three models, only the Schindler 1000 is not sold in Indonesia. Together they are marketed under the "Adding the EXTRA to the ORDINARY" promotional slogal[12].

The year 2021 also saw the discontinuation of both Schindler 3300 and 5500 from Indonesia. The successor of these models are the Schindler 3000 and 6000 respectively.

Also in late 2023, another brand new model called Schindler 6000 was introduced as a mid to high end model as well as a direct successor of Schindler 5500.

Schindler 3000

Released in early 2020, it replaces the Schindler 3300 in 2021 which had been on sale since 2007. It is designed for buildings with up to 35 floors. The maximum speed is 2 meters per second and the maximum capacity is 1350 kilograms. It can be a machine room less or a conventional type with smaller machine room, and uses a new controller developed by Schindler themselves.

Schindler 5000

Also released in early 2020, it is a mid end model positioned between the Schindler 3000 and 6000. The difference between this model and the Schindler 3000 is that the 5000 can serve up to 60 floors, run up to 4 meters per second and has a maximum capacity of 2500 kilograms. Likewise, it can be a machine room less or a conventional type with a smaller machine room. It uses the same controller as the Schindler 3000. Contrary to most elevator enthusiasts believe, it is not a direct successor of Schindler 5500.

Schindler 6000

This model was released in late 2023 as a mid to high end model above the Schindler 5000 and is a direct successor of Schindler 5500. It will be available in Indonesia sometime in the 2024. The maximum capacity, speed and amount of floor serving is 2600 kilograms, 3 meters per second, and 50 floors respectively. It can be installed with or without a machine room[13].

Schindler 7000

Schindler 7000 remains the current flagship model of high speed elevator for high rise buildings. In Indonesia, nearly all installations are found in high rise office buildings in Jakarta and they operate with PORT destination dispatch.

Schindler 2600

This is a heavy duty freight elevator model sold since 2005 and is a successor of Schindler 80. It is very rarely seen in Indonesia because most newer freight elevator installations are from XJ Schindler.

Unique features and characteristics

  • Most Schindler elevator models would change their floor number on the floor indicators just before departing the previous floor (advanced number change), with the exception on certain models like Schindler 300 P MRL, 5400 AP, 5500, 3000, 5000, 2600 and Elegant MRL/Classic, as well as those unnamed models that use third party controls like Shanghai STEP.
  • Older Schindler elevators manufactured up until the late 1990s have very distinctive door operation and locking/unlocking sound thanks to Schindler's in-house built QKS door operator. Some high rise elevators have fast door movement to speed up service. Those that use telescopic doors typically have much louder sound.
  • A lot of Schindler 300 P, 5400 AP, Elegant MRL and other models working with Miconic MX-GC controls would often cancel a floor selection whenever the elevator is about to make a third trip. The same thing also happens with Schindler 3300 which work with Bionic control. The cause is unknown.

Accidents and incidents

  • On 8 May 2023, at around 18:45, more than ten people were trapped in three separate elevator cars for approximately two hours at Pakuwon Tower Casablanca, Jakarta before being rescued by firefighters. The cause of the incident was suspected to be technical errors in the elevator systems[15]. The three elevators involved in the incident were of Schindler 7000 high speed type.

Trivia

  • Schindler was the first elevator company from a German speaking nation to enter Indonesia, followed by Thyssen in the 1980s (later ThyssenKrupp in 2005). Schindler made its first presence in Indonesia as early as the 1960s.
  • Of the four major Western elevator brands (aka the "big four"), Schindler is the most popular one in Indonesia followed by Kone, Otis and ThyssenKrupp.
  • Schindler was also the first elevator company to have installed destination dispatch elevators in Indonesia. The first ones installed in the country are believed to be from 1995.
    • It is also an elevator company in Indonesia with the most number of destination dispatch elevators installed in the country than any other major companies (followed by Kone and Mitsubishi). The majority of them are found in Jakarta.
    • As well as having the most number of destination dispatch elevators in the country, it is also the first one to have installed destination dispatch elevators in a place other than office, in this case, a hotel. The Westin Hotel Jakarta (part of Gama Tower, completed in 2016) is believed to be the first hotel in Indonesia to have destination dispatch elevators, followed by Alila Jakarta SCBD which have Sigma instead.
  • Since Central Cipta Murdaya has a long relationship with Schindler and was heavily involved with the establishment of Schindler in Indonesia in 2000, almost every buildings that belongs to CCM's "portfolio" have Schindler elevators. Some examples are Pondok Indah Mall (Jakarta, since 2004), Jakarta International Expo (Jakarta), Hotel Majapahit (Surabaya), and Grand City Mall (Surabaya, 2009). Even its headquarters in Cikini, Central Jakarta is also equipped with Schindler elevators. The Berca Building in Jl. Abdul Muis, Jakarta also has 1990s Schindler elevators with M-Series fixtures. Meanwhile, the World Trade Center complex in Jakarta, which is managed by Jakarta Land (a joint venture between CCM and Hongkong Land), is known to have Schindler elevators in five of the six office buildings within the complex.
  • It is one of the only three major elevator companies in Indonesia having a training facility. The other two are Mitsubishi and Kone.
  • PT Capitol Mutual Corporation, Schindler's former Indonesian distributor, would later become the sole agent for Toshiba elevators and escalators in Indonesia until 1998 when the role was succeeded by PT Toshindo Elevator Utama. It was possible that CMC switched over to Toshiba after Schindler appointed Berca Indonesia as its new sole agent in order to stay in the elevator business.
