Overview
Schindler 5500 was a traction elevator model of Swiss elevator company Schindler. Unveiled in 2013, it was designed for low to high rise buildings with up to 50 floors and was a mid range model positioned between the Schindler 3300 and Schindler 7000. It was available with or without machine room, and unlike its predecessor models, it uses coated steel belts as its hoisting ropes (similar to Schindler 3300) as opposed to the conventional steel ropes.
While the model was officially launched for global markets in May 2013[1], it was already launched in 2011/2012 for selected markets only[2]. In Asia Pacific, it replaced the Schindler 5400 AP which had been on sale since the 2000s. Schindler 5500 was discontinued in 2021 and was succeeded by the Schindler 6000 in 2023.
In Indonesia, it is mainly found in large buildings like shopping centers, office buildings and hotels. It is rarely seen with a capacity of less than 13 persons or 1000 kilograms. Some installations work with Schindler PORT destination dispatch.
Characteristics
- The Schindler 5500 has advanced door opening. The car would usually slightly overshots a floor when the doors open.
- It has a very distinctive door movement sound. Doors were supplied by Wittur, and Sematic for glass doors.
- Direction arrow on the car floor indicator appears when the elevator is moving, unlike the Schindler 3300 where the arrow appears when the car stops.
- Floor number on the car floor indicator changes in-between two floors. On landing floor indicators, the number will change as soon as the elevator starts moving.
- Control cabinet for machine room less type is located on the top floor and is integrated with the door frame. The size is roughly the same as Schindler 300 P MRL and 5400 AP.

Fixtures
Until the late 2010s there were three main fixtures lineup used in the Schindler 5500; Linea 100, Linea 300 and Linea Vetro. It was also possible to be fitted custom fixtures or even a combination with Linea fixtures.
From 2020 onward, CleanCall touchless buttons which are part of the Schindler CleanMobility can be retrofitted to existing Linea fixtures.
Linea 100
Linea 100 is similar to FI GS but features a wider LED dot matrix display, two color button illumination (white when not pressed, and red when pressed) and flushed operating panels. Some installations, especially those installed after 2019, have single color button illumination and the floor indicators use the same dot matrix display as FI GS; this is considered as the basic type of Linea 100.
These fixtures are now used for the new Schindler 3000 and 5000 models following the discontinuation of 5500 in 2021.
Linea 300
Linea 300 is similar to Linea 100 except that the car floor indicator display is rectangle. A black variant of these fixtures also existed. Like Linea 100, these fixtures are currently used in the new Schindler 3000 and 5000 models following the discontinuation of 5500 in 2021.
Linea Vetro
Linea Vetro are premium fixtures made of tinted black or white glass panels with touch sensitive buttons and LCD floor indicators. In Indonesia, only two examples of these fixtures have been found so far, one in the Grand Ballroom of Jakarta International Expo (black version)[3] and two in Seminyak Village Shopping Mall, Bali (white version)[4].
Linea and/or custom fixtures combination
It was possible for Schindler 5500 elevators to have a combination of Linea 100 or 300 and custom or third-party fixtures such as LCD floor indicators and hall lanterns. Examples of this combination can be found in the Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta, InterContinental Jakarta Pondok Indah and Menara Astra, Jakarta[5]
Linea 120 Touch
Very few Schindler 5500 elevators installed after 2019 are fitted with Linea 120 Touch fixtures, similar to the Schindler 3300 elevators. These fixtures were available in light blue or black, and the car operating panels are usually full height. Linea 120 Touch fixtures on Schindler 5500 are considered as the successor of the Linea Vetro fixtures. An example of these fixtures can be found in Beachwalk 2, Bali[6].
Custom or third-party fixtures
Schindler 5500 elevators could also be fitted with custom or third-party fixtures like Dewhurst or Everbright buttons, but this is extremely rare. The retail service elevators at Menara Astra[7] and World Trade Center 3[8] in Jakarta are currently the only known examples.
CleanCall
CleanCall are touchless buttons that work by sensors, in other words, there's no need to touch or press them[9]. Part of the Schindler CleanMobility solutions, it was released in mid 2020 as part of their clean mobility solutions in response with the COVID-19 pandemic. CleanCall has been installed at Pondok Indah Mall 3, Jakarta[10].

Trivia
- If a car call is cancelled and the elevator has no further calls to serve, it will stop at the next floor and release the door interlock[11].
- Contrary to most elevator enthusiasts believe, the Schindler 5500 is not succeeded by the Schindler 5000. According to people who work at Schindler, the successor of 5500 is Schindler 6000, a brand new model released in late 2023 and is positioned as a mid to high end model above the Schindler 5000.
