Schindler Destination Dispatch

From Indonesia Elevator Guide
Jump to: navigation, search

This article is about the destination dispatch systems of Swiss elevator manufacturer Schindler.

Overview

Schindler was the first elevator company in the world to introduce this intelligent elevator system, with Miconic 10 being the first system introduced in 1992. Destination dispatch works by grouping passengers who are going to the same destination floors to the same elevator cars as an effort to provide a more efficient and faster service as well as reduce waiting and journey time. With this way, the elevators won't stop at every floor.

It replaces conventional up and down call buttons with numerical keypads or touch screens, where passengers enter their desired destination floor. The display will then shows the designated elevator car they must take. Inside the elevator there are no physical floor buttons[1], and only door controls and alarm buttons are present. The destination floors are shown on displays found on the door frames where passengers can see their destination floor(s).

Miconic 10

Miconic 10 was Schindler's first destination dispatch elevator system, introduced in 1992 as the first practical destination dispatch elevator system in the world. In Indonesia, it was available until 2012 when it was discontinued and succeeded by The PORT Technology.

This system has been known to work on the Schindler 300 P, 500 P, 700, 5400 AP and 7000 elevators.

Fixtures

The keypads used in Miconic 10 are known as Z-Line. These are wall mounted panels with numerical buttons and a small display. At least three different variants have been produced:

  • Silver buttons with monochrome display, without backlight (older type)
  • Silver buttons with monochrome display, with blue backlight (newer type)
  • Silver buttons with color LCD display (newer type after the late 2000s)

Destination indicators, located on both side of the car door jamb, use a set of segmented displays.

Notable installations

It is believed that Berca Indonesia had installed a handful number of Miconic 10 systems in the 1990s. It is not known where and when the first one was installed in Indonesia, but it is believed that it might have been at either Wisma GKBI or Graha Surveyor in Jakarta in 1995.

By the early 2020s, a few installations have already been upgraded into Schindler PORT.

Some of the well known installations:

  • Menara BCA, Jakarta (2007, mid-rise elevators upgraded with PORT)
  • The City Tower, Jakarta (2008)
  • World Trade Center 2, Jakarta (2011)
  • Menara Karya, Jakarta (2006)
  • The East, Jakarta (2006)
  • The Energy, Jakarta (2006)
  • The City Tower, Jakarta (2008)
  • Menara Prima 1, Jakarta
  • Menara Palma, Jakarta
  • Talavera Office Park, Jakarta (2008)
  • APL Tower, Jakarta (2009)
  • AXA Tower, Jakarta (2010, low rise elevators upgraded into PORT)
  • 88 @ Kota Kasablanka Tower 1, Jakarta (2011)
  • Graha Surveyor, Jakarta (1995, most likely original since the beginning)
  • Wisma GKBI, Jakarta (1995, most likely original since the beginning, low rise elevators upgraded into PORT)
  • Bank Indonesia - Menara Radius Prawiro, Jakarta (late 1990s)

A few examples which are actually "upgrades" from conventional 1990s Schindler elevators:

  • Pondok Indah Office Tower 1, Jakarta (1996, upgraded again into PORT in the late 2010s)
  • Menara Mulia, Jakarta (1992, upgraded in the 2000s)
  • Graha Aktiva, Jakarta (1991, upgraded in the 2000s)

Schindler ID

SchindlerID keypad. Notice the card reader attached on the bottom.

Schindler ID was Schindler's second generation of destination dispatch elevator system after Miconic 10. Released in 2000, it incorporates security access features and card readers on the Z-Line keypads. The user can scan their access card and the system will automatically register a call for their destination floor. Along with Miconic 10, Schindler ID was discontinued in 2012 and was succeeded by The PORT Technology. It is easily identified by a card reader attached on the bottom of the Z-Line keypad, and is usually found on the main/lobby floor.

This system has been known to work on the Schindler 300 P, 500 P, 700, 5400 AP and 7000 elevators.

Known installations

  • Menara Bakrie, Jakarta
  • Ratu Prabu Tower 2, Jakarta
  • Menara BCA, Jakarta (2006)

PORT

PORT (officially known as The PORT Technology, PORT stands for Personal Occupant Requirement Terminal) is the third generation of Schindler's destination dispatch elevator system after Miconic 10 (1990) and SchindlerID (2000). It incorporates numerous state-of-the-art security features and can be integrated with security gates (turnstiles) to enhance building's security. All PORT elevators have touch sceens in the elevator lobby.

This system has been known to work in the Schindler 5400 AP, 5000, 5500 and 7000 elevators. In the late 2010s, the system was updated with improved operating system (known as PORT OS), redesigned touch screens and updated user interfaces.

The first Schindler PORT in Indonesia was believed to be installed at DBS Tower (Ciputra World Jakarta 1), Jakarta in 2012.

Fixtures

There are five different PORT touch screen variants which are known as "PORT Terminals". All of these have built-in card reader under the screen, which is identified by an illuminated circle. The current PORT touch screen graphic interface used since the late 2010s is called "portOS".

  • PORT 1: V-shaped with an angled up display and plastic trims.
  • PORT 1.2: Glass variant of PORT 1, can be wall mounted or pedestal.
  • PORT 1 Wide: Wider variant of PORT 1.
  • PORT 4: Flushed mounted flat touch screen made of glass.
  • PORT 4 Pro: Larger variant of PORT 4.

PORT 1 touch screen can also be mounted on security gates if these gates are integrated with the system.

Destination indicators inside the elevator cars are the same as Miconic 10 or SchindlerID for older installations. Newer installations use LCD displays. Schindler 5500 with PORT use LED dot matrix displays. In the late 2010s, a new LCD destination indicator was introduced.

Trivia

  • On SchindlerID, if you input four digits of random number on the keypad the display will show "INVALID". This is because the system regards the number as PIN code[2].
  • The operating system used in the latest PORT touch screens is called portOS.
  • One of the tallest Schindler Miconic 10/SchindlerID installations in Indonesia is at Menara BCA in Jakarta (56 floors).
  • Due to security reasons, almost all PORT installations in office buildings in Indonesia are integrated with turnstiles and access cards.

Notes and references

  1. The actual floor buttons are concealed behind a locked cabinet which will only work during firefighting operation or certain operating modes.
