Schindler Traction Elevators (1990s)

This article refers to Schindler elevators produced in the 1990s.

Overview

Schindler had produced a number of Schindler traction elevators for low to high rise buildings in the 1990s and shipped them to several Asian countries such as Singapore, (British) Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and also Indonesia. These elevators were available as standard low to medium speed model (with geared machines) or custom type high speed model (with gearless machines), and were distributed by Schindler's previous Indonesian distributor Berca Indonesia. A portion of these elevators were also produced by China Schindler Elevator (CSE) in China, and were distributed separately by Berkah Kurnia Elevarindo.

There are no known model names for these elevators. Many elevator enthusiasts often refer the model names as "MB-DS" (Miconic-B Dynatron-S) for low speed geared model, "D-MV" ("Dynatron Miconic-V") for medium speed geared model and "TTZP" (Transitronic Zwolf (12) Pulse) for high speed gearless model. For accuracy reason, all of these names are considered unverified or unconfirmed due to lack of valid and sufficient evidences. All of these models were produced until around the late 1990s and were succeeded by Schindler's newly improved models, such as 300 P and 500 P for the low to medium speed models, and 700 for the high speed model.

In Indonesia, Berca Indonesia had installed a handful number of these elevators throughout the 1990s, mostly in high rise office and apartment buildings in Jakarta. A few number of existing high rise installations in Jakarta have been upgraded with Schindler Miconic 10 destination dispatch in the 2000s to improve traffic efficiency. Unfortunately these elevators are now becoming rare to see as many of them have been replaced.

Characteristics

  • These elevators typically have quick leveling, meaning that the doors open as soon as the car stops.
  • Nearly all 1990s Schindler elevators are equipped with Schindler's door operator, QKS. This door operator produces very distinctive "clicky" and sometimes "squeaky" sounds. Doors usually have rubber ends and the landing doors have big triangle keyhole. Some older elevators use door bumpers instead of sensors.
  • Almost all of these elevators use Schindler's Miconic microprocessor controllers. The floor number on the floor indicators changes as soon as the car starts moving.
  • On some elevators, if one calls the elevator while the doors are closing the arrival chime will sound.

Fixtures

Buttons

The buttons are known as M-Series, introduced in 1978. These are rounded rectangle aluminum button with a long strip lamp at the top that lights up red. A stainless steel/silver variant also existed but this is very rare. The buttons could be touch sensitive or mechanical push. For the touch sensitive buttons, you simply touch them and they will light up. The push button ones are just micro-click button with a rounded area where you push it.

Floor indicators and hall lanterns

There were two types. The first one is a digital segmented display commonly found in 1980s-1990s installations. The second is a scrolling LED dot matrix display, usually found in mid to late 1990s installations.

Hall lanterns

Hall lanterns are wedged triangles and light up yellow. Later installations in the 1990s have clear acrylic-like triangle lanterns that light up red and green. Most elevators have a combination of landing floor indicator and hall lanterns.
