Overview

designS was an economical elevator model produced by Swiss elevator manufacturer Schindler between 1984 and the 1990s. It was a low speed passenger elevator model primarily designed for low rise residential and commercial buildings. The model was available in geared traction or hydraulic, and was believed to have been produced at the Ebikon factory in Switzerland. It was discontinued in the 1990s.

It was mainly sold in Europe but also sold in Asia[1], including Indonesia where only a handful of installations had been installed by Berca Indonesia (Schindler's former distributor) between the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some installations may have the "designS" logo imprinted on the car operating panel but most installations don't.

Characteristics

  • Traction type had two speed AC drive, with abrupt acceleration and deceleration.
  • Simplex (one car) installations had their LOP mounted on the door frame, while duplex (two cars) ones had their LOP mounted on the wall in between the elevators.
  • The car layout is always a through type, with side mounted COP.
  • Door frames are always box type.

Fixtures

The fixtures used on Schindler designS elevators are known as S-Series. They are available in four different variants; stainless steel (with grey buttons), grey, blue and vandal resistant.

The buttons are square micro click type with green dot light in the center and white lettering on the side. Stainless steel variant have grey colored buttons, while vandal resistant variant have round button with a red dot light on the side. Alarm buttons are always yellow.

Floor indicators

S-Series use green LED dot matrix display for the floor indicators. The floor number either scrolls or fades when changing. Landing floor indicators always have scrolling number, and during arrival they will repeatedly show scrolling arrows.

Some installations have green arrows on the LOP which function as hall lanterns and will only light on arrival.

Known installations in Indonesia

As of 2024, there were only three known places in Indonesia that had this model.

  • Perdana Wisata Hotel, Bandung (modernized by Schindler in the 2000s, one derelict unit was found in 2016, building is currently closed)
  • Sahid Hotel Bandar Lampung, Bandar Lampung (1990-2020s, replaced into Nidec)
  • Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel, Bali (1990-2021, passenger elevators only, modernized by Schindler in 2005, replaced into Schindler 3300 in 2021)[2]

Trivia

Notes and references

  1. So far the only known Schindler designS elevator in Asia was found in PS Tower, Bangkok, Thailand. See this video to see how the elevator look like.
  2. The three passenger elevators at Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel, Bali had their original S-Series landing indicators retained after the modernization although they were no longer working, which at the very least it proves that S-Series fixtures did exist in Indonesia. In 2021, the passenger elevators were replaced into Schindler 3300 while the service elevators were given a second modernization.
