Sigma Modernization
This article is about elevator modernization of South Korean elevator company Sigma, a subsidiary of Otis Elevator Korea.
Overview
Elevator modernization by Sigma refers to the method of upgrading older elevators that are generally 15 years and older by replacing the major mechanical and electrical components with new ones to improve safety and reliability, whilst keeping the existing elevator car and certain components that are deemed still functional. This modernization applies for elevators manufactured by GoldStar Industrial Systems (later LG Industrial Systems) prior to the 2000s, as well as early Sigma elevators from the early 2000s. It cannot be applied to any elevators made by manufacturers other than GoldStar/LG and Sigma/Otis Korea. Sigma modernization solutions have no specific model names.
2000s to 2020s
Between the 2000s and 2010s, Sigma modernization was offered in three different packages (known as MOD Package) to suit with the owner's choice and budget, they are:
- MOD 1: A package which includes replacing the controller, traveling cables, car fixtures and instrument box.
- MOD 2: Similar to MOD 1 but also includes replacing the landing fixtures and hoisting ropes.
- MOD 3: Similar to MOD 1 and 2, but also includes replacing the motor.
The fixtures used in the modernization were the same as the ones used in the "first generation" (for modernizations done between the early and mid 2000s) and "second generation" (for modernization done from the mid 2000s onward) Sigma elevators for regular new installs. For more information, refer to Sigma Di#Fixtures.
2020s to current
Since the late 2010s, Sigma offers elevator modernization in two packages:
- MOD Prime: A package which only includes replacement of the controller, traveling and hoisting cables, and landing/car fixtures. It is the most basic and cost-effective package.
- MOD Plus: Similar to MOD Prime, but also includes replacement of the traction motor with a new gearless motor.
The fixtures used in the current Sigma modernization are almost the same as the ones used in the "second generation" Sigma elevators. For more information, refer to Sigma Di#Fixtures.

Trivia
- A modernized 1980s GoldStar elevator can usually be easy to tell by their rather slim hall operating panels as the new panels had to be designed to fit with the existing wiring holes on the wall from the old elevators. Some elevators also retain their old interior floor indicator above the door.
