TK Elevator, or TKE for short, is a German elevator manufacturer from Dusseldorf, Germany.

Overview

Based in Dusseldorf, Germany, TK Elevator is currently the third largest elevator manufacturer in the world. The elevator factory is located in Neuhaussen while the escalator factory is located in Hamburg.

It was originally an elevator business of German multinational conglomerate thyssenkrupp until 2021. On February 27, 2020, thyssenkrupp announced that they would sell its elevator business to a private equity led by Advent, Cinven and RAG foundation[1]. The purchase was successful, and in February 2021, the elevator business was officially spun off into a new independent company known as TK Elevator[2].

Overally speaking, it can be said that the history of TK Elevator actually started in the 1950s when German elevator maker Eggers Kehrhahn merged with Rheinstahl AG and became Rheinstal Eggers Kehrhahn. In 1970, Rheinstahl was sold to Thyssen AG due to financial difficulties and six years later it became Thyssen Aufzuge AG. This continued until 1999 when Thyssen merged with Krupp and became ThyssenKrupp in 2001.

TK Elevator in Indonesia

It operates under the name TKE Elevator Indonesia. Prior to the separation from thyssenkrupp, it was known as PT. ThyssenKrupp Elevator Indonesia and later PT. thyssenkrupp Technologies Indonesia. The head office is located in the Trihamas Building along Jalan T.B. Simatupang, Jakarta. A branch office is located in Surabaya.

History

TK Elevator (then ThyssenKrupp) began its business in Indonesia in 2005 after acquiring the sole agent/distributor of Dong Yang elevators, Pura Kencana[3][4]. It was meant so that they could expand its business to the Indonesian market. But before that, ThyssenKrupp had already installed a handful number of elevators in Indonesia through Marico Gria, who previously installed Thyssen elevators. In Indonesia, ThyssenKrupp was known as PT. ThyssenKrupp Elevator Indonesia before changing its name to PT. thyssenkrupp Technologies Indonesia in the late 2010s. In 2021, it became TK Elevator Indonesia following the separation of thyssenkrupp's elevator business.

Before thyssenkrupp entered Indonesia, Thyssen Aufzuge, the predecessor of ThyssenKrupp had installed a number of elevators in the country from 1984 to 2001. They were distributed by Thysindo Griatama, which is now known as Marico Gria or just MG[5]. After Thyssen merged with Krupp in 2001, Marico Gria became the distributor of ThyssenKrupp products until 2005.

Applications

TK elevators are mostly seen in high rise apartments, hotels, shopping centers and hospitals. A few office buildings use TK elevators, such as Menara Kuningan and The Manhattan Square in Jakarta (the latter have destination dispatch)

Thyssen era (1984-1999)

Main article: Thyssen

Thyssen entered the Indonesian market in 1984 through Thysindo Griatama (now Marico Gria) and since then it had installed a significant number of elevators in Indonesia. Thysindo Griatama distributed Thyssen products until 1999 when the Thyssen and Krupp merger occured.

ThyssenKrupp era (2001-2021)

ThyssenKrupp logo (late 2000s to 2015)

In 2001, both Thyssen AG and Krupp successfully merged and became ThyssenKrupp. In October 2003, ThyssenKrupp acquired South Korean elevator manufacturer Dong Yang and became ThyssenKrupp Dongyang until 2008 when it changed name to ThyssenKrupp Elevator Korea.

ThyssenKrupp acquired Dong Yang's Indonesian distributor PT. Pura Kencana in 2005[3][4], which marked the start of ThyssenKrupp's elevator business in the country. This also marked the end for Marico Gria's role as ThyssenKrupp's distributor in the country.

Main article: Korean TK Elevator in Indonesia

Apart from the usual Zhongshan made elevators, TKE also imports and installs Korean TKE elevators from South Korea. These elevators are produced at the Cheonan factory in Cheonan, Chungcheong, South Korea. However, they are not widely installed in Indonesia due to their high costs.

Destination dispatch

Destination Selection Control (DSC)

Destination Selection Control (DSC) is TKE's previous destination dispatch system. It was discontinued in the early 2020s and replaced with AGILE, TKE's current system.

These elevators normally comes with touch screen fixtures outside. DSC could be applied to the ThyssenKrupp GL, HP61 and possibly Evolution models.

The first known ThyssenKrupp DSC elevator system in Indonesia was installed at The Manhattan Square in Jakarta. Originally the first ThyssenKrupp DSC in Indonesia was going to be installed at Menara Kuningan in Jakarta in 2007[3], but due to unknown reason it never happened and the elevators were just conventional elevators.

AGILE

AGILE is the current destination dispatch of TKE since the early 2020s, replacing the DSC system. It currently can be applied on the TKE zeta200, zeta300 and possibly meta200 models.

In Indonesia, this system has been installed at the People's Representative Council (MPR/DPR complex, works with TWIN elevators), and the Attorney General's Office (Kejaksaan Agung) in Jakarta.

TWIN

TWIN is an innovative elevator system by TKE which comprises of two elevator cars traveling in one shaft. The two cars travels independently in a single shaft, with one car above the other cab. Each car has their own machine, controller, ropes, counterweight and governor but shares the same guide rails and landing doors in the shaft. The purpose of this system is to make elevator service faster and more efficient, as well as saving building space, in other words, additional elevator shafts are not needed since a single shaft already fits two elevator cars. Moreover, the system operates with AGILE destination dispatch system as compulsory feature to make the elevator service more efficient. TWIN was unveiled in 2002, and the first installation was installed at the University of Stuttgart in Germany. The first TWIN elevator in Asia was installed in South Korea in 2003.

The first TWIN elevator in Indonesia was installed at the Nusantara I Building in Jakarta in 2020.

Trivia

  • TKE is currently the only one of the "big four players" in Indonesia in which its head office resides in a building with elevators not made nor installed by themselves. In this case, the Trihamas Building in Jakarta where the head office currently resides has Sigma elevators.
  • It is also the youngest of the "big four players" in Indonesia. While Otis established its subsidiary in the country in 1992 followed by Kone in 1995 and Schindler in 2000, thyssenkrupp established its Indonesian subsidiary in 2005. However, their first elevators in Indonesia had already been installed as early as 2002.
  • When Thyssen was still in business, it was the second elevator manufacturer from a German speaking nation to enter Indonesia after Schindler (which is a Swiss company). Before the German reunification occured in 1992, it was one of the two West German elevator manufacturer to export its elevators to Indonesia (the other one was Lift Munich).
  • Apartemen Taman Rasuna in Jakarta was considered to be Thyssen's largest elevator contract in Indonesia, with more than 30 elevator units installed in each of the apartment blocks, including the office park and Aston hotel (now Horison).
  • The Palembang Light Rail Transit (LRT) in Palembang is considered to be thyssenkrupp's largest project in Sumatra. Almost all of its stations are equipped with thyssenkrupp's Evolution MRL elevators and Velino escalators. Certain stations are also installed with Orinoco moving walkways.
  • When ThyssenKrupp was about to enter Indonesia, there was a plan to build an elevator factory in Jakarta through a partnership with Marico Gria but this was shelved because of a disagreement with Marico Gria, who felt that ThyssenKrupp would acquire it.
  • Marico Gria still exists today and they provide elevator installation, maintenance, repair and modernization using components and parts made by either Schneider Steuerungstechnik GmbH (LiSA) from Germany or Shanghai STEP from China. In addition, they are also a distributor of MP (Mac Phuarsa) elevators from Spain, as well as Walec and Sepac elevators from China.
    • They also maintain some of the remaining Thyssen elevators in Indonesia, such as the ones at Apartemen Taman Rasuna in Jakarta and Plaza Surabaya in Surabaya.
  • Since thyssenkrupp took over Pura Kencana, they automatically got the maintenance contract for the remaining Dong Yang elevators in Indonesia. Even today, there are still a few numbers of Dong Yang elevators that are maintained by TKE.
  • The word "Thysindo" in Marico Gria's old company name is most likely a combination of the word "Thyssen" and "Indonesia".
  • Since the 2020s, TKE home elevators are also distributed by a company called Kiat Tangguh Bersama (KTB Indonesia)[10].
