Toshiba Elevators (1990s)
This article is about 1990s Toshiba elevators in general.
Overview
Toshiba elevators from the 1990s were available as standard passenger (traction and hydraulic), high speed, bed/stretcher, and freight type. These elevators were produced from the late 1980s until the late 1990s in Japan. Almost all of these elevators have no known model names.
These elevators were also produced by South Korean elevator manufacturer Dong Yang under license from Toshiba, as both company had a technical collaboration. For more details about these elevators, refer to this page.
Characteristics
- CV60 elevators typically have audible frequency noise when the elevator operates.
- Floor button light will goes off as soon as the doors open.
- Arrival chime is either a bell or electronic sound, the latter seems to be used a lot in high speed models.
- CV60 and other geared models typically have slim door sills, while CL series high speed elevators typically have thick door sills.
Models
CV60
CV60 is a standard passenger elevator model that was produced from the late 1980s until the late 1990s. It is a low speed AC geared model designed for low to high rise buildings, and was the first Toshiba model to adopt a VVVF inverter which provided smoother ride and could reduce power consumption. The speed is typically 1 meter per second or less. It is a successor of the Toshiba CV40 model.
It is based on the Toshiba Elemate Celebrum VF model that was sold in Japan since the mid 1980s.
Characteristics
- Compared to the CV40 model, the ride quality has been improved and the design has been significantly changed.
- It produces a loud variable frequency noise during operation due to the application of VVVF inverter.
- Arrival chime is a bell sound in most cases. Electronic sound exists but this is very rare.

High speed elevators
Toshiba's 1990s high speed elevator models had no known model names, but it is assumed that they are known as the CL series. These elevators use gearless motors and are typically custom type, meaning that they could be specified based on client's request and requirements. It seems that they use Toshiba's Command-AI group supervisory control system with car pre-assigment feature using artificial intelligence based on a high speed 32-bit microprocessor.
Most of the 1990s Toshiba high speed elevators in high rise office buildings in Jakarta are of this model.
Known installations in Indonesia:
- Summitmas II, Jakarta (1992, modernized by Toshiba in the 2010s)
- Graha CIMB Niaga, Jakarta (1993, modernized by Kone in 2018)
- JW Marriott Mega Kuningan, Jakarta (1998)
- Atria @ Sudirman, Jakarta (1994, modernized in 2023)
- Bank Indonesia - Building B, Jakarta
Bed elevator
These elevators have no known model names and the design is similar to the CV60 model They are rare to see in Indonesia. An example of this elevator can be found in Horison Hotel Bekasi (service elevators)[1].
Hydraulic elevators
These elevators have no known model names, and are extremely rare in Indonesia. They were available as passenger and bed elevator type. The design is similar to the CV60 model, and it seems that these elevators adopt holed hydraulic mechanism where the hydraulic piston comes out from under the pit.
Known installations in Indonesia:
Graha CIMB Niaga, Jakarta(1993-2018, elevator serving the basement floors, replaced into Kone MonoSpace)- JW Marriott Hotel Mega Kuningan, Jakarta (1998, the elevator serving the basement floors is suspected to be a hydraulic)
- Ngurah Rai International Airport - Domestic Terminal, Bali (1998)[2]
Fixtures
Buttons
The buttons are square black plastic with green light (dark orange for the down call button). There are two types of button panel; one is a beige colored plastic panel with stainless steel sides (standard), and the second is just a flat stainless steel panel.
Floor indicator hall lanterns
Floor indicators use 16-segments display which are either on the button panel or above the door. There was also an analog display with green illuminating numbers but this is extremely rare.
Hall lanterns are usually crystal-shaped which light up green/red or orange.
Other known installations in Indonesia
- Wisma Mandiri I, Jakarta (1991, replacement from unknown 1969 elevators)
- Plaza Bank Index, Jakarta (1992)
- Setiabudi Atrium, Jakarta (1991, passenger elevators modernized by Toshiba in the late 2010s)
Plaza Sequis, Jakarta(1994-2015, building demolished)- Plaza Mutiara, Jakarta (1998)
Wisma Nugra Santana, Jakarta(modernized by Louser Lift)- Bank Indonesia - Building B, Jakarta
- Wisma BSG, Jakarta
- Wisma Budi, Jakarta (1990)
Wisma AKR, Jakarta(building demolished)
Trivia
- The number 60 on the CV60 name is probably a reference to the speed used in the model, which is 60 m/min (or 1 m/sec).
