Otis Gen2
Overview
Gen2 (often stylised as GeN2) is Otis's current traction elevator, introduced in 2000. It is the best selling product produced and sold by Otis.
Otis Gen2 is different than other elevator models. It uses patented flat polyurethane coated steel belts rather than conventional steel ropes. Otis claims that these belts are lighter and last twice than traditional steel ropes, and have less bending radius which allows the motor to have smaller pulleys. A special electronic device, known as PULSE, monitors the condition of the belt ropes and alerts the local Otis office should a damage is detected on one of the belts.
Most Gen2 elevators are equipped with ReGen, a regenerative drive that could feed the elevator's energy to the building's internal electrical grid where it can be used for other building appliances instead of dissipating it as heat. Otis claims that the ReGen drive can save up to 75% of energy usage compared to non-regenerative drives[1].
Gen2 is mainly designed for low rise buildings, although it can also be used in high rise buildings that are 20 or 30 storey high. It can be machine room less or a conventional traction model with a machine room above the shaft. It can also be used for modernization of older elevator, which is known as Gen2 Mod.
Almost all Gen2 models sold in Indonesia are made in China. There are several Gen2 variants sold in Indonesia, but the most common ones are Gen2 Premier, Gen2 Comfort and Gen2 Regen. Otis had also sold the European Gen2 Premier/Comfort model which was manufactured in Germany or Spain, but this is extremely rare in Indonesia.
Characteristics
Gen2 characteristics vary between variants, but in general:
- They always make a distinctive buzzing sound whenever they are running.
- Floor button light goes off once the door starts opening.
- Some Gen2 elevators would make a rubbing-like noise whenever they are running, due to the belt cables.
Variants
These are some of the Gen2 variants that have been known to exist in Indonesia.
2000s
Gen2 Premier (2000s)
- Main article: Otis Gen2 Premier (2000s)
Gen2 Premier was one of the first Otis Gen2 variants known to sold in Indonesia in the 2000s. Produced in China, it was mainly aimed for residential and commercial buildings. The design is very similar to the Otis 3200 elevators, albeit with different buttons.
It was discontinued sometime in the late 2000s and replaced by the Gen2-Regen, a newer Gen2 variant produced by Otis's Chinese subsidiary Xizi Otis (now Otis Electric). In the late 2010s, Gen2 Premier returned to Otis's Indonesian product lineup as a newly improved model and is now the current Gen2 variant sold in the country, replacing the Gen2-Regen.
Gen2 Comfort
- Main article: Otis Gen2 Comfort (2000s)
Gen2 Comfort was another Gen2 variant sold in Indonesia in the 2000s, manufactured in China. Estimated to be a cost saving Gen2 model, it was mainly intended for residential and basic commercial buildings[2]. The maximum capacity is limited to only 1000 kilograms. Unlike Gen2 Premier which uses concave buttons, Gen2 Comfort uses either square plastic (similar to Otis 3200) or silver buttons.
Xizi Otis Gen2
Xizi Otis, Otis's Chinese subsidiary which is now known as Otis Electric, also produced Gen2 elevators in the 2000s. These elevators use the same design and fixtures as Xizi Otis's OH 5000 elevators, with white square buttons that light up orange on the edges and floor indicators with orange segmented numbers and arrows, although they could also use other buttons. Despite being made by Xizi Otis, they are usually branded as "OTIS" on the inside while the Xizi Otis name is only seen in parts thats are not visible to the public, such as controller. There is no known variant name for this particular Gen2 model.

Gen2-Regen
- Main article: Otis Gen2-Regen
Gen2-Regen (stylized as GeN2-Regen) is a Gen2 variant that was produced by Xizi Otis (now Otis Electric since 2016) between the late 2000s and 2010s in Hangzhou, China. In Indonesia, it was sold from the late 2000s until 2010s when it was succeeded by the new Gen2 Premier.
Gen2-MR
Gen2-MR (stylized as GeN2-MR) is a variant of Otis Gen2 with an overhead machine room above the shaft. It was manufactured by Xizi Otis (now Otis Electric) in Hangzhou, China and the design is the same as Gen2-Regen. The maximum capacity and speed was initially 1000 kilograms and 1.75 meters per second respectively[3] until July 2013 when it was increased to 1600 kilograms and 2.5 meters per second respectively as part of Phase 2 model.

European Gen2 Comfort / Premier
Citas Otis had also installed a very small number of European Gen2 elevators in Indonesia in the early 2010s. These elevators were manufactured in Germany or Spain. Likewise, Gen2 Comfort (launched in 2005) was aimed for the residential and basic commercial segments while Gen2 Premier was designed mainly for commercial buildings.
Specification wise, the Gen2 Comfort had a capacity range of 320-1000 kilograms and the speed is only 1 meters per second. For Gen2 Premier, the capacity range is 630-2000 kilograms and the maximum speed is 1.6 meters per second.
The European version of Otis GeN2 has a completely different aesthetic look compared to the one made in China. The design and fixtures are based on the Otis 2000 elevators, with round silver concave buttons and blue LCD floor indicators. The car operating panels have vertical white lights on the sides which also function as the car's interior light. In the mid 2000s, the fixtures received a minor facelift with redesigned car button plates. Interior design was available in six options; Optima (basic/economical), Selecta (mid end), Lumina (high end), Resista (vandal resistant), Panorama (panoramic/glass car), and BedLift (exclusive for bed elevators).
