Dong Yang Elevators (1990s)
This article is about Dong Yang elevators that were produced in the 1990s, which include low to high rise traction and hydraulic models.
Overview
For over 30 years, Dong Yang had been producing elevators under licensed with Toshiba, so the elevator design was almost identical to Toshiba. In fact, Toshiba's CV and CL series were also used as model names.
The CV series was a series of low-medium speed geared traction elevator models for low to mid rise buildings, with the CV60 being the most common model. The CL series was a series of high speed gearless elevator models for high rise buildings. On the other hand, the hydraulic models had no known model names. These are extremely rare in Indonesia, and so far the only known place having Dong Yang hydraulic elevators is Pondok Indah Mall 1 in Jakarta.
Characteristics
It is almost the same as Toshiba's model apart from the different brand name and a few cosmetic differences. When the elevator starts up, a whirring noise (presumably the variable frequency) can be heard on the top floor. The floor button light goes off once the doors open, and car calls from the opposite direction will be automatically erased when the elevator has reached the top or bottom floor.
A 1990s Dong Yang elevator can be easy to tell if:
- The call buttons have triangle arrows. Most Dong Yang elevators have the normal "arrowhead" arrows on the call buttons (similar to Toshiba) but there are some elevators where the arrows are triangles.
- The floor indicators use 10 segments display with solid arrows on the exterior floor indicators. Toshiba used 16 segments display with segmented arrows instead.
- The door control buttons have triangle arrows. Toshiba used the "arrowhead" arrows on the door control buttons, with a "standing man" on the door open button.
- Fireman switches have a square hole. Toshiba's fireman switches have a round hole instead.
CV series
CV is a series of low to medium speed geared traction elevator models for low to mid rise buildings. Models belong to this series are CV60, CV60HS, CV65 and CV85.
CV60
CV60 is a low speed AC geared traction passenger elevator model designed for low to mid rise buildings, released in late 1991. It is based on Toshiba's model of the same name, and was the first Dong Yang model to adopt VVVF inverters. The speed is typically only 1 meters per second or less. It was discontinued in 1991 and was succeeded by the DY20 model.
In Indonesia, this model was mainly installed in low rise hotels as well as mid rise apartments built in the 1990s. Most of the Dong Yang elevators installed during that time are believed to be of this model.
Characteristics
- As this model uses VVVF inverter, the variable frequency noise can be heard during operation.
- Ride quality is generally poor unless it is well maintained.
- Floor button light goes off once the doors open upon arrival.
- Arrival chime is basically a bell sound, but there are some elevators which use an electronic sound instead.
- Most CV60 elevators have no keyhole on the landing doors.
Known installations in Indonesia
- Birawa Assembly Hall, Jakarta
Hotel Cipta Mampang, Jakarta(presumably replaced into a different brand)Apartemen Brawijaya, Jakarta(1993-2017, replaced into ThyssenKrupp GL)- As-Syafi'Iyah University, Pondok Gede, Jakarta
- Salak The Heritage Hotel, Bogor (1998)
- The Jayakarta Bali Residences, Bali (1994, refurbished)

CV60HS
This is a medium speed version of CV60. It is almost the same but the ride quality is relatively good due to the structure of the motor and the application of helical gears. The speed range is not known.
CV65
Not much is known about this model but it seems to be an improved model of the CV60, but there is not much improvement except that the inverter voltage has risen from 220V to 380V. Discontinued in 2001.
CV85
Released in 1996, this model appears to be a follow-up model of CV60. Very little is known about it, but the arrival chime is either a bell (standard) or electronic (optional) sound. Discontinued in 2001.
CL series
CL is a series of gearless high speed elevator models for high rise buildings. Models belong to this series are CL65, CL70, CL75 and CL90. The differences between each models are not known due to lack of information.
It is very difficult to see in Indonesia as they were not widely installed in the 1990s. A few known examples were:
Wisma Slipi, Jakarta(1992-2016, replaced into Sigma Iris NV)- Grand Tropic Suites, Jakarta (1996, modernized by ThyssenKrupp)
- Jaya Building, Bintaro Jaya, Tangerang (1996, low rise elevators only)
Bed elevators (traction)
Dong Yang bed elevators produced in the 1990s were almost the same as the passenger models. These are very rare in Indonesia. Pantai Indah Kapuk Hospital in Jakarta (modernized) and a hajj lodging facility in Pondok Gede, Jakarta are currently the only known places having these elevators.
Hydraulic elevators
Dong Yang hydraulic elevators have no known model names. These are extremely rare in Indonesia, and to date the only known place having such elevators is Pondok Indah Mall 1 in Jakarta.
This was the hall station of of service elevator number 3. Elevator has since been replaced into a Schindler 3300 in 2013.
Fixtures
All 1990s Dong Yang elevators, regardless of models and types, use the same set of fixtures. Because Dong Yang elevators were licensed by Toshiba, the fixtures are almost identical to Toshiba.
The button panels could be a light brown colored plastic or a flat stainless steel panel.
Buttons
The buttons are black plastic square with green light. The difference with Toshiba's buttons is that the call and door control buttons use triangle arrows.
Floor indicators and hall lanterns
The floor indicators are 16-segments displays and they are either on the button panel or above the door. Hall lanterns are either triangle or crystal shaped which light up green for up and red for down.
Other known installations in Indonesia
These are some of the other known 1990s Dong Yang elevators in Indonesia. Some of them no longer exist.
