General information
|
Toshiba Elevator and Building Systems Corporation (Japanese: 東芝エレベータ株式会社), or commonly referred as TELC, is a Japanese manufacturer of elevators and escalators.
Overview
It was originally a maintenance company for elevators produced by Japanese conglomerate Toshiba Corporation (the parent company) since 1967, but in 2001 the division was spun off into a company called Toshiba Elevator and Building Systems (TELC) which conducts development and manufacturing of elevators and escalators. The company is based in Kawasaki-shi, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.
As of 2007, it is the third largest elevator manufacturer in the Japanese elevator market share based on the total number of elevators installed.
On 24 March 2022, Toshiba announced that it would sell its elevator division, and so far it had attracted interest from Kone (who had a strategic alliance in 1998 and is now one of the shareholders of Toshiba), Otis, TK Elevator and even Chinese conglomerate Midea Group[1].
Toshiba elevators in Indonesia
It operates under the name PT. Toshindo Elevator Utama since 1998 and is currently based in Kelapa Gading, Jakarta. It is also a member of APPLE Indonesia.
History
It is believed that Toshiba entered the Indonesian market in the early 1980s through PT Capitol Mutual Corporation (CMC). CMC had previously served as the sole agent for Swiss elevator manufacturer Schindler from the 1970s until 1980, when the role was replaced by PT Berca Indonesia.
In 1985, CMC installed six "Toshiba Command 80" group system control elevators with DC gearless drives and Thyristor-Leonard control system at Wisma Metropolitan II (the present day World Trade Center 6) in Jakarta. By 1990, CMC had branches in Bandung, Semarang and Surabaya as well as one representative in Medan. It also had an elevator factory in Jakarta and Tangerang which was operated by PT. Satriagema Sejahtera Sejati.
CMC continued to serve as Toshiba's distributor until 1998 when the role was succeeded by PT. Toshindo Elevator Utama. It still exists today under the name Central Mitrausaha Cerlang, although it no longer involves in the elevator industry.
Applications
In Indonesia, Toshiba elevators are mostly found in high end office buildings and hotels. In Jakarta, they are mostly found in office buildings along Jalan Sudirman, such as Summitmas I and II, One Pacific Place Jakarta, Intiland Tower and many more including the Sahid Sudirman Center, which is one of the tallest buildings in Indonesia (completed in 2015) and contains high speed Toshiba elevators.
They are also used in some luxurious hotels such as Ritz-Carlton Jakarta Pacific Place, Ritz-Carlton Mega Kuningan, JW Marriott Jakarta, etc. In the commercial segment, there are three major shopping malls in Jakarta that use Toshiba elevators, they are Pacific Place Jakarta, Gandaria City and Kota Kasablanka. However, some of the elevators at Gandaria City and Kota Kasablanka have been modernized by Daesung IDS, a South Korean brand.
Elevator models
Note: Models listed in Italic have no known names.
1980s
Standard type (low to mid rise)
No information is available for this particular model as no existing examples have been discovered yet in Indonesia. It is believed that the model is a two speed AC traction with relay controls.
For the fixtures, the buttons are translucent which light up entirely when pressed, and were either rectangle or round. There was also a touch sensitive button which is extremely rare and is normally seen in high rise installations. The floor indicators are analog featuring horizontal display with orange illuminating numbers over a black or brownish background. For indicator combined with the hall station, it is a dark brown display with orange illuminating numbers.
Command 800
This was a programmed high speed elevator system for high rise buildings, featuring "Command 80" group supervisory microcomputer controller and Thyristor-Leonard direct current (DC) drives. It was also capable to adjust the elevator service speed correctly and accurately so that passengers wouldn't have wait for too long[2]. The fixtures are the same as the standard/conventional model except that they use touch sensitive buttons which are extremely rare, and the floor indicator is a set of illuminating squares.
Known installations in Indonesia:
- Summitmas I, Jakarta (1984, modernized in 2016)
- World Trade Center 6, Jakarta (1985, modernized in 2017-2018)[2]
Released in the early 1980s, it is a standard passenger elevator with microcomputer controls for low to mid rise buildings. It is easily distinguished by its interior floor indicator with flashing green dots below the number.
1990s
- Main article: Toshiba Elevators (1990s)
Released in the late 1980s, it is a standard passenger elevator model with VVVF inverter control for low to mid rise buildings. Most of the 1990s low rise Toshiba elevators in Indonesia are of this model. It is also the successor of Toshiba CV40.
CL series (1990s)
CL is a series of custom type high speed gearless elevator models for high rise buildings. Most of 1990s Toshiba high speed elevators in high rise buildings in Jakarta are of this model, and are mainly seen in office buildings.
Hydraulic elevators
Not much is known about this model, but it is believed to be using holed hydraulic mechanism. It used the same design and fixtures as the CV60 elevators, and it was also available as a bed elevator.
2000s to 2010s
An unnamed standardized traction passenger elevator model that was produced and sold in the 2000s. These elevators appear to use geared motors and were mainly installed in low to mid rise buildings. The buttons are dark rounded square plastic with red illumination, and the floor indicators are either red segmented or dot matrix display. The model is believed to be produced in either Malaysia or China.
This is a gearless traction elevator model released in the 2000s. Discontinued in the early 2010s and was succeeded by the Toshiba ELCOSMO-III model.
This is a machine room less elevator model released in the 2000s. Discontinued in the early 2010s and was succeeded by the Toshiba SPACEL-III model.
2010s to current
Released in early 2010s, it is a successor of the ELCOSMO-III model. The design and fixtures have been significantly updated.
ELCOSMO-III High Speed
This is a variant of ELCOSMO-III for high rise office and residential buildings.
Released in early 2010s, it is a successor of the SPACEL-III model. The design and fixtures are the same as ELCOSMO-III.
New ELBRIGHT
This is a custom type high speed elevator model for high rise buildings sold since the 2000s. It uses the CL series controller.
Known installations in Indonesia:
- Equity Tower, Jakarta (2009)
- Alamanda Tower, Jakarta
- One Pacific Place Jakarta (2007)
- Plaza Asia, Jakarta (2003)
- Plaza Marein/Indofood Tower, Jakarta
- Gandaria 8, Jakarta (2010)
- Sahid Sudirman Center, Jakarta (2014)
ELCARGO-VF
This is a freight elevator model that looks very much like an Otis elevator[3].
FLOORNAVI
FLOORNAVI is Toshiba's destination dispatch elevator system. This system has not yet been installed in Indonesia.
Malaysian Toshiba elevators
- Main article: Malaysian Toshiba elevators in Indonesia
Apart from importing China made Toshiba elevators, Toshindo Elevator Utama also imports Malaysian Toshiba elevators which are manufactured by MS Elevators Sdn. Bhd. (now Toshiba Elevator Manufacturing Asia Sdn. Bhd. since 2022) in Malaysia since the late 2000s. These elevators are often sold under the "MASHIBA" trademark, but a lot of these elevators are unbranded. A number of these elevators have been installed in Java and also Bali, and they are mostly found in low to mid rise buildings.
Modernization (ELFRESH)
ELFRESH is Toshiba's solution for modernization of older Toshiba elevators, similar to Mitsubishi's ELEMOTION modernization solution.
Notable Toshiba elevator installations
Unique features and characteristics
- Car call cancel; if a floor button is pressed while it is on, it will blink for a short period and will go off if it is pressed again. The cancelling method is basically the same like most other brands, i.e. two times press.
- Floor button light will go off once the elevator stops and the doors open, similar to Otis.
- In some elevators, the arrival chime will sound if a floor button is pressed while the elevator opens up and has no calls to serve, similar to TKE elevators.
Trivia
- In the 1980s and probably 1990s, Toshiba had an elevator factory in Tangerang, Banten which was operated by PT. Satriagema Sejahtera Sejati.
- It was possible that CMC switched to Toshiba after Schindler appointed PT Berca Indonesia in 1980 as its new distributor in order to stay in the elevator business.
- Toshiba had a technical collaboration with South Korean elevator company Dong Yang from the late 1960s until 1999. Dong Yang made elevators under Toshiba's license, and almost of their elevator models were actually rebranded Toshiba models.
- It also had a techinical cooperative with Kone in 1998 to develop Toshiba's SPACEL machine room less elevator for the Japanese market which was based on the Kone MonoSpace platform. As the result:
- The Kone Test Laboratory in Tytyri, Finland had a Kone/Toshiba branded double deck elevator for testing purposes[4]. It was replaced into a new Kone double deck elevator featuring new interiors and fixtures[5]. The double deck elevators at Taipei 101 in Taiwan are powered with Kone EcoDisc MX100 gearless motors, even though they were manufactured by Toshiba.
- Some early Toshiba SPACEL elevators in Japan use the Kone EcoDisc hoisting motor.
- Selected subway stations of the Toei Ōedo Line in Tokyo had Kone MonoSpace elevators[6][7].
- Kone is still one of the three shareholders of TELC, with 19.90% stake as of April 2019.
- The Kone TravelMaster 110 escalator has a landing cover pattern that looks the same like the patterns used in Toshiba elevators.
