Notes: One of the largest elevator manufacturers in Europe

Orona is a Spanish elevator manufacturer currently based in Gipuzkoa, Spain.

Overview

Founded in 1964 as a manufacturer of boiler making equipment, Orona began manufacturing elevators in 1967 under a licensing agreement with Italian elevator manufacturer Sabiem. After the agreement ended in the 1970s, it began developing its own products.

It is currently the largest elevator company in Spain, as well as the fifth largest in Europe (as of 2024). It is also one of the leading Spanish elevator companies that have successfully exported and sold its elevators to overseas markets around the world through its own subsidiaries as well as third party distributors and affiliated companies.

Orona in Indonesia

It is unclear when Orona started entering Indonesia but it is speculated to be in the 1990s. There are not many Orona elevators found in Indonesia, so they are extremely rare.

The company currently responsible for supplying and installing Orona elevators in Indonesia is not known although on Orona's website, Indonesia is clearly marked on their global distribution map[1].

Characteristics

  • Orona elevator fixtures have very distinctive design. Newer Orona 3G and Next series elevators have green illuminating buttons and floor indicators. Almost all newer Orona elevators have button beep sounds.
  • Most newer Orona elevators have voice announcement. Direction voice is announced when the elevator starts moving, unlike most other brands where it is usually announced when the doors are open.

1990s

There are no known model names for 1990s Orona elevators. At least one installation was found in Abadi Hotel, Jambi but it has been modernized by Louser.

2000s

There are no known model names for Orona elevators produced in the 2000s. It has been known that the machine room less type uses a worm gear machine. The buttons are oval shaped with a small red light on the side, and the floor indicator is an oval shaped display with a segmented (the arrow is LED dot matrix) or monochrome display. Later models feature an updated design and fixtures, with bigger oval buttons and floor indicator displays.

Known installations in Indonesia:

  • Kemang Icon, Jakarta (2000s, modernized by IMTEK)
  • Hotel Kini (formerly Hotel Santika), Pontianak (2003, modernized by Hosting)

2010s

3G

It is a series of traction (with or without machine room) or hydraulic passenger elevator that was produced between the early 2010s and 2020s. Initially it features oval shaped buttons and arced floor indicators with red illumination. In the mid 2010s, the design was greatly changed and improved. The buttons are now round silver with a green illuminating edge, but there are also square buttons with a white light. The floor indicator uses either green LED (segmented or dot matrix) or a TFT colored LCD display. Most installations have Spanish accented English voice announcement. The controller is called Arca II, which was developed in-house by Orona.

All the newer Orona installations in Indonesia from the 2010s are of this model, and almost all of them are machine room less.

Known installations in Indonesia:

  • Prajurit Cafe, Surabaya (2021)
  • Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali (2018 & 2020, two in the domestic terminal and another in the international terminal)
  • Pattimura Airport, Ambon, Maluku (2020)

Orona Next

Released in the early 2020s (possibly 2021), it is Orona's current series of traction-only elevators and is a successor of their 3G range models. The design is almost the same as the 3G series mentioned above. The voice announcement has been changed from male to a female voice. It is also the first series of models to feature Orona's new corporate identity. There are at least six models belong to this series:

  • Next Essentia: Small sized elevator for low rise residential buildings.
  • Next Smart: Standard elevator
  • Next Smart+: An extended range version of Next Smart with larger capacities.
  • Next Flex: A flexible small sized elevator for buildings that previously did not have an elevator.
  • Next Rise: High rise elevator for high rise buildings up to 64 floors.
  • Next Cargo: Freight elevator with a capacity range of 1000-5000 kilograms.

None of those models have been found in Indonesia, but new installations after 2022 are expected to be of these models.

Notable Orona elevator installations in Indonesia

As of August 2023, there were only six places in Indonesia having Orona elevators:

  • Kemang Icon, Jakarta (2000s, modernized by IMTEK)
  • Prajurit Cafe, Surabaya (2021)
  • Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali (2018 & 2020, two in the domestic terminal and another in the international terminal)

Trivia

  • Its domestic competitor is Mac Phuarsa (MP) Lifts, whose products in Indonesia are currently distributed by PT. Marico Gria.
  • One unique characteristic of Orona is that many of its elevators installed in overseas countries would bear the name or logo of the local installer/distributor. The same practice is also used by Mac Phuarsa (MP) Lifts.
    • At least one Orona elevator in Indonesia bears a logo of LINES[2], which is a trademark of local elevator company PT. Indoraya Nusantara Djaya. It is unknown whether the elevator was installed by LINES, or that LINES is the sole distributor of Orona elevators in Indonesia.
