Overview

Fujitec is currently based in Hikone, a city in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It was founded in 1948 by Shotaru Uchiyama as Fuji Transportation Industry Co., Ltd. (Japanese: 富士運輸工業株式会社) for the purpose of development, manufacture, sales, installation and maintenance of elevators. In 1974, it changed name to Fujitec Co., Ltd.

As of 2007, it is the fifth largest elevator manufacturer in Japan based on the number of elevator installations.

Fujitec in Indonesia

Fujitec entered Indonesia in the 1970s or 1980s through PT. Teratai Mas as its distributor. In 1989, Teratai Mas was acquired by Fujitec and PT. Fujitec Indonesia, which is basically the Indonesian subsidiary of Fujitec, was established under a joint investment between Fujitec Japan and Fujitec Singapore.

The head office is in Kembangan, Jakarta. There are branch offices located in Bandung, Surabaya and Makassar. There was also a branch in Denpasar, Bali but it has closed down. Fujitec Indonesia also had an elevator plant in Batam, Riau Islands which has closed down since the 2000s.

It is mainly found in high rise office buildings in Jakarta, as well as some mid and high end hotels. Some shopping centers also use Fujitec products, such as Bella Terra Lifestyle Center and AEON Mall Tanjung Barat in Jakarta.

1970s to 1980s

Superdyne

It is a model of standard passenger elevator produced in the 1970s. The buttons are round white plastic and the floor indicator is an analog display with illuminating circles. A version with microprocessor control known as Royal Superdyne (RSDN) was released in 1978.

Known installations in Indonesia:

Royal Superdyne Imperial (RSDN / ACVV)

Also known as ACVV, this is a standard passenger elevator model released in 1981 and is a successor of Superdyne. It is divided into standard and custom made version. For standard version, the buttons are round with a black square frame and the floor indicator is analog with illuminating squares, though in most cases the interior floor indicator is a long black display with orange illuminating numbers. The custom made version uses white octagonal buttons and floor indicators with digital display, and the capacity is typically larger than the standard version. Motor sound is very distinctive upon starting and stopping.

Known installations in Indonesia:

Exceldyne (EXDN)

Released in 1984, it was the first Fujitec model to adopt a variable voltage and frequency (VVVF) as well as dot matrix LED display for the floor indicators. The direction arrows on the floor indicators scroll when the elevator is moving. The buttons are square grey plastic with a small orange dot light on the corner, and the door control buttons are wider than the rest of the buttons. It was sold until around the 2000s. This model has not been seen yet in Indonesia.

DC-GL

It is a model of gearless high speed elevator for high rise buildings produced in the 1980s. The drive system is direct current (DC) and the design is nearly the same as the custom made Royal Superdyne Imperial model in most cases. The main elevators at Chase Plaza, Jakarta is estimated to be of this model[1].

1990s

AC-GD

Estimated to be a low to mid rise AC geared traction model. For reference, the elevators serving the parking floors of Wisma 46 in Jakarta are of this model[2].

Known installations in Indonesia:

AC-GL

This is a custom AC gearless high speed elevator model for high rise buildings. Most of 1990s high speed Fujitec elevators installed in high rise office buildings and hotels in Indonesia are of this model, including the high rise elevators at Wisma 46, Jakarta[3].

2000s to 2010s

Not much is known during this period as there are not many 2000s Fujitec elevators found in Indonesia. On a design feature, these elevators still use the standard LED dot matrix floor indicators with scrolling arrows, but they are now orange instead of red. The buttons are plastic black square and light up orange.

Known installations in Indonesia:

Exceldyne ii

This is an improvement of the original Exceldyne inverter controlled model, estimated to be released in the late 1990s or early 2000s. The fixtures have been redesigned with dark grey square buttons which light up orange and the door control buttons are no longer wider. This model has not yet been seen in Indonesia.

Exceldyne RS

A successor as well as an improvement of Exceldyne ii, and probably the last Exceldyne model. The design and fixtures have been significantly updated to this model.

ECEED-ii

This is a machine room less elevator model. The design and fixtures are similar to the ones used in Exceldyne RS. This model has not yet been seen in Indonesia.

2010s to present

Starting from this period, almost all Fujitec elevators imported to Indonesia are made by Huasheng Fujitec in China unless otherwise stated.

ML-GS

A cost-effective machine room less elevator model for low rise buildings. The interior options are basic and some additional features and options were omitted. Discontinued sometime in the 2010s.

Known installations in Indonesia:

GLVF

A series of gearless traction elevator models for low to high-rise buildings, produced by Huasheng Fujitec in China. Most of the Fujitec elevators installed in Indonesia in the 2010s are of this model. There are several models and each of them varies depending on the maximum number of floors and speeds. Discontinued in 2018 (?) and was succeeded by Fujitec ZEXIA.

  • GLVF-D: Custom high speed elevator for high rise buildings[4].
  • GLVF-E: Standard passenger elevator for low to mid-rise buildings[5]. It is basically the low entry variant of GLVF.
  • GLVF-H: Medium speed passenger elevator for low to high-rise buildings[6].
  • GLVF-II: Slightly similar to GLVF-H, but can serve up to 32 floors[7].

MLGS-II

It is a machine room less elevator model for low to high-rise buildings (can serve up to 24 floors). It shares the same design and fixtures as the GLVF models[8].

ZEXIA

Released in 2015, it is the current model of conventional traction elevator with an overhead machine room. It is also a successor of the GLVF series. In 2018, the model received an updated design and fixtures.

REXIA

Also released in 2015, it is the current model of machine room less elevator. It is also a successor of MLGS-II. In 2018, the model received an updated design and fixtures.

ELSIA

It is the current custom high speed elevator model for high rise buildings, believed to be a successor of AC-GL. The speed range is between 2.5 and 10 meters per second and the maximum capacity is 2000 kilograms. The elevators at Menara Jakarta is estimated to be of this model[9]. In 2024, the main tower elevators at Wisma 46, Jakarta were modernized with this model and boast the first Fujitec EZShuttle destination dispatch installation in Indonesia[10].

EZShuttle

EZShuttle (previously known as FLEX-NX) is Fujitec's elevator destination dispatch system for high rise buildings. This system has been installed in Indonesia for the first time at Wisma 46, Jakarta in 2024 as part of a modernization project[10].

Modernization

Singaporean style modernization

Commonly found in Singapore, these modernizations typically use third party (non-Fujitec) buttons made by Everbright Hong Kong and LED dot matrix display. The floor indicator display is also identical to Singaporean Fujitec elevators. At least two examples have been found in Jakarta, they are in Plaza 89 and BRI II.

Unique features and characteristics

  • Almost all Fujitec elevators will refuse car calls from the opposite direction until the elevator has served the final call (e.g. if the elevator is traveling upward, lower floors cannot be selected). This is most likely due to the "anti-nuisance" feature by default.
  • Non-serving floors or express zone will be shown as "-" or "- -" on the floor indicators.
  • On Fujitec elevators with LED dot matrix floor indicators, the direction arrow movement mimics the actual movement of the elevator (e.g. when the elevator starts up or slows down, the arrow moves slowly). This has been used since the Exceldyne model in the 1980s.
  • Almost all Fujitec elevators open their doors as soon as they stop.

Accidents and incidents

  • On 20 January 2017, a Fujitec elevator at BRI II, Jakarta fell down from the third floor during lunch hours, injuring passengers inside[11].

Trivia

  • Fujitec is the first Japanese elevator company in Indonesia to have established its own subsidiary in the country, followed by Mitsubishi (in 1996) and Toshiba (in 1998). It also appears to the the only elevator company in Indonesia established under a joint investment between two elevator companies of the same name.
  • It is one of the three major Japanese elevator companies whose products are mostly made by its Chinese subsidiary in China instead of Japan, other than Hitachi and Toshiba.
  • Because Fujitec was initially known as Fuji Transport Industry, elevators installed before 1974 were branded as "FUJI".
  • It is the only major Japanese elevator manufacturer that does not belong to a large group of company or conglomerate.
