Otis Modernization
This article covers elevator modernization of Otis, the largest elevator manufacturer in the world.
Otis is the first elevator company in Indonesia to have completed an elevator modernization for the first time in Indonesia. The first known elevator modernization in Indonesia was done at Wisma Nusantara, Jakarta in 1989[1].
Note: All known installations listed below were originally Otis elevators unless otherwise stated.
1990s
Since the first elevator modernization in Indonesia was successfully completed by Otis at Wisma Nusantara, Jakarta in 1989, many buildings in Indonesia (specifically Jakarta) began considering to modernize their aging Otis elevators which had been operating since the 1970s and even 1960s. They were Arthaloka Building, Grand Sahid Jaya Hotel, Kosgoro Building, Hotel Indonesia, etc.
Elevonic 411M was Otis's flagship modernization model for upgrading older Otis elevators in high rise buildings like offices and hotels in the 1990s. It was based on the regular Otis Elevonic 411 for new installations, but with the existing elevator cars and other components retained and most of the electrical components were replaced. The drive system, which was previously a direct current (DC) with motor generator set, was also replaced with a more energy efficient drive featuring variable voltage and frequency (VVVF). Most of these installations have been modernized again or replaced in the 2010s, so it is now difficult to find an original Elevonic 411M installation.
Known examples in Indonesia:
Wisma Nusantara, Jakarta(1972 / 1989, replaced into Mitsubishi NexWay in 2012)[1]- Hotel Borobudur, Jakarta (1974 / 1996)[2]
- Grand Sahid Jaya Hotel, Jakarta (1974 / 1990s, modernized again by Nidec in 2021)
Kosgoro Building, Jakarta(1976 / 1990s, building demolished in 2020)The Sultan Jakarta - Old Tower, Jakarta(1976 / 1990s, replaced into Kone MiniSpace in the 2010s)- Wisma Hayam Wuruk, Jakarta (1975 / 1990s, modernized again in the 2010s)
Note: (original installation year / modernization year)
2000s
Otis's modernizations are relatively rare in Indonesia during the 2000s. These modernizations typically use concave buttons and digital indicators, similar to the ones used in the Otis Gen2 Premier and other Chinese Otis models. Later, Otis started using LCD indicators and blue buttons which look very similar like the ones used in the Otis Gen2-Regen and OH 5000 elevators. Sometimes generic buttons and floor indicators are also used, but this is very rare.
Known examples in Indonesia:
- Prince Center, Jakarta (1980s? / 2000s)
- Siloam Hospital Kebon Jeruk, Jakarta (1990s / 2010s)
- Berita Satu Plaza, Jakarta
- Menara Duta, Jakarta (1980s / 2000s?)
Modernization on non-Otis elevators
Otis also did modernizations on older elevators from other manufacturers, but these examples are extremely rare. An example of this modernization can be found at Wisma Argo Manunggal in Jakarta, which was originally a Hitachi elevator from 1984 (see embedded video below).
2010s
Between the mid 2010s and early 2020s, the modernization design look like this. The buttons can be from Otis or Shanghai STEP (generic). For Otis buttons, they are actually a remake of the same concave button design that was used in the early Gen2 Premier elevators in the 2000s, with curved numbering plate next to the button. There is also a vandal resistant button with a tiny dot lamp in the middle but this is extremely rare.
The floor indicators are usually color LCD display, although an Otis 2000 style LCD floor indicator is also used. Some modernizations may also use Otis 2000 call button panels (usually with generic buttons) and external Otis 2000 style LCD indicators.
The model name for this particular modernization is not known.
Known examples in Indonesia:
- Blok M Plaza, Jakarta (1989 / 2014)
Menara Taspen, Jakarta(1976 / 2017, building demolished in 2022)[3]- Graha Mustika Ratu, Jakarta (1992 / 2014)
- Bakmi GM Sunda, Jakarta (1990s / 2017)
- Graha Pratama, Jakarta (1997 / 2019?)
- Hotel Kartika Chandra, Jakarta (1990s / 2010s)
- Sheraton Surabaya Hotel & Towers, Surabaya (1996 / 2016)
Gen2 Mod
Gen2 Mod is a modernization model that is based on the regular Otis Gen2. These elevators use the same equipment as the regular Gen2 models, but the machine and controller are housed in the existing machine room. The design and fixtures are the same as the Gen2-Regen and OH 5000 elevators. It can also be applied to any non-Otis elevators.
Known examples in Indonesia:
- Kondominium Taman Anggrek, Jakarta (2020, originally 1995 Schindler elevators)
- Oakwood Suites Kuningan, Jakarta (2022, previously 1990s Otis)
SkyRise Modernization
SkyRise Modernization is a modernization model for older high speed elevators in high rise buildings. It is based on the regular Otis SkyRise model for new installations, and Otis's Compass 360 destination dispatch can be applied as an option. This model has not yet been found in Indonesia.
2020s
Since 2022, Otis has brought a new modernization package featuring Korean Otis fixtures, similar to the ones used on newer Sigma elevators as well as Otis elevators in South Korea. Most modernization are considered part of Gen2.
The current modernization is divided into three packages:
- Prime: Includes replacement of the fixtures and controller.
- Plus: Similar to Prime, but includes replacing the motor for traction elevators.
- Pro: Replacing most of the major components with the ones similar to that of new installations. Existing landing doors may be kept.
Known installations in Indonesia:
- Menara Satu Kelapa Gading, Jakarta (2023, originally 2011 Sigma elevators)
- Oakwood Suites Kuningan, Jakarta (2023, originally 1990s Otis elevators)
- Griya OBOR, Jakarta (2024, originally 1990s Otis Spec 60VF elevators)
