Overview
GPS and GPS-II were Mitsubishi's two standard passenger elevator models, produced from the early to late 1990s. It is a geared traction model with variable voltage and frequency (VVVF), and was designed for low to high rise buildings. They are the successor of Mitsubishi SPVF.
GPS was launched in 1992 followed by the GPS-II in October 1995, the latter is basically an improvement of the original GPS model with improved control system and extended capacity range. Both models were discontinued in the late 1990s and succeeded by the Mitsubishi GPS-III, which was launched in 1997.
There was also a variant for bed/stretcher, known as GPS-BII. It was mainly used in hospitals, as well as high rise apartments where they are used as service elevators.
Both GPS and GPS-II are based on the Mitsubishi GRANDEE standard passenger elevator model in Japan which was released in 1990[1] as a successor of Mitsubishi Elepet Advance V (SPVF for overseas markets). Some people in the elevator community often claim that GPS is GRANDEE. This is incorrect, as GRANDEE was exclusively sold in Japan and GPS was produced for overseas markets.
They were also produced by Mitsubishi's Chinese subsidiary Shanghai Mitsubishi under their own brand. Apart from that, the design and features remained the same. None of these examples have been found in Indonesia.
In Indonesia, Mitsubishi GPS and GPS-II elevators are mainly found in small to medium sized commercial buildings and hotels, as well as high rise apartment buildings built in the 1990s. They are also often seen in mid to high rise office buildings as service elevators or elevators serving the parking floors.
Characteristics
- Both GPS and GPS-II are known to have very smooth acceleration and door movement. Some elevators have rather loud (but satisfying) motor sound when the elevator starts up and stops.
- It has a very distinctive car design. Standard specifications have slightly angled car station and slim door sills. For elevators with a flat front return panel, the door sills are always thick.
- Most elevators use the standard Mitsubishi electronic chimes, while some others use the older bell chime.
- Arrival chime will not sound when the call button is repeatedly pressed upon arrival, unlike its succcessor.
- Car call cancel feature that allows the user to deselect a wrong floor by pressing the same button again twice was supported as an option.[2].
- When the elevator is in energy saving mode (i.e. car lights are off and all indicators are dim), the door open button lights up until the elevator is used again. This is probably to indicate people that the elevator is not stuck and they can safely get out of the elevator by pressing the door open button should they happen to be in the elevator while it is on this mode.
- Unlike its successor GPS-III, the direction arrow on the landing floor indicator will not flashing upon arrival.
GPS
GPS was launched in 1992 as a successor of Mitsubishi SPVF, the first Mitsubishi model with VVVF inverter control. Compared to SPVF, the GPS uses Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) for its inverter module and a 16-bit microprocessor control with a distributed processing control system. The maximum capacity is 1000 kilograms[3].

GPS-II
GPS-II was launched in October 1995 as an improvement of the original GPS model. It is pretty much the same like GPS except that the controller has been upgraded to a 32-bit microprocessor unit and an Application Specific Integration Circuit (ASIC) has been applied for its motion control. In addition, the maximum capacity has been extended to 1350 kilograms[3].
It was discontinued in the late 1990s and succeeded by the Mitsubishi GPS-III.

GPS-BII
GPS-BII is the bed/stretcher elevator version of GPS-II for hospitals and medical facilities. There are some cases where this model is used as a service elevator for apartment buildings. It was discontinued in the late 1990s and was succeeded by the Mitsubishi GPS-BIII model.
Fixtures
Mitsubishi GPS, GPS-II and GPS-BII had two types of button panel; stainless steel and dark grey panel made from polyvinyl chloride. The latter is known as "Waveline Panel" due to its unique wave-like design and was the standard panel. In most cases, the car station is slightly angled close to the car door.
Buttons
Soft pressure black rectangle buttons with orange light. The door open button has a green symbol but lights up orange when pressed. These buttons are known as M type.
Floor indicators
Orange LED dot matrix display which would later become a standard feature for later Mitsubishi models. The number flashes upon arrival, except on the exterior indicator. The interior floor indicator is separated from the button panel. Landing indicator could be on top of the door or integrated with the call station.
Hall lanterns
Clear acrylic-like square blocks that light up yellow white and flash when the elevator arrives. These lanterns have a white arrow that sits behind the glass.
